It was indeed as hot as predicted that next day on New Caprica, but Kara figured that could only help her plan. The hotter they were, hopefully the more bothered they would be. And although the high temperature probably wouldn’t be necessary to put them in the proper mood when they saw each other, why leave anything to chance. She looked up from the drawing she was making in the dirt outside her tent with a stick when she saw him coming. Right on time. He looked miserable. ‘Not for long Old Man,’ she thought. Not for long.
“What do you hear, Starbuck?” Bill asked with a smile as he walked up.
“Nothing but the rain, sir,” Kara answered. “Actually, I wish,” she finished with a laugh.
“I hear you. I can’t believe I let you talk me in to coming down here when conditions are like this.” As if to emphasize the point, Bill mopped the sweat from his brow with his uniform sleeve. “So what’s this about a picnic? Never heard one described as urgent before,” he finished with a smile.
“Yeah, was just trying to get your attention with that,” Kara offered with an embarrassed shrug, “sorry, but I figured you could use some better company than the Colonel and Hotdog. So I decided to invite you down here to join us for this little impromptu garden party we’re going to be throwing today up at the pond on the North Ridge.” She surprised herself at how well she could lie when properly motivated.
“So who is going to be there?”
“Just myself and Sam, the Pres… I mean Laura,” Kara duly noted the involuntary smile on his face at her name, “and Tory.” She choked a bit on Tory’s name as she saw the girl coming straight for them. She hoped she’d catch on quick and play along. Tory was a prissy little princess as far as Kara was concerned, but she did seem to care about Laura enough to want to see her happy, and Kara figured that this might be a frakked up way of going about achieving that, frakked up being her specialty of course, but this plan definitely had a good chance of ending with Laura and the Old Man both being quite blissful. She had no doubts about that.
“Admiral, hello, it’s a pleasure to see you,” Tory said as she walked up.
“Hello Tory,” he answered kindly. “So I hear we’re all headed to the North Ridge for a little fun.”
“Excuse me?” Tory asked, her eyes nearly popping from her skull.
“That’s right, I forgot to tell you Tory, that I invited the Admiral to join us on our picnic,” Kara said quickly, jumping in and praying the girl was as sharp as her reputation suggested.
“Oh right, our picnic, well I’m glad to hear it, sir,” Tory answered, looking over at Kara questioningly.
“So where are Sam and Laura?” Bill asked, apparently oblivious to the signals being flashed urgently between the two young women.
“Sam’s running late, and Laura is already on her way to the pond,” Kara answered. She reached down and picked up a rolled blanket and rucksack that were resting on the ground beside her and handed them over to the Admiral. “Why don’t you take these provisions and head on up to the North Ridge yourself to keep Laura company. Tory and I will wait for Sam and be right behind you.”
“Sounds good,” Bill replied, clearly liking the idea of getting some time alone with Laura well enough not to question Kara’s instructions.
“You know the way, right?” Kara asked.
“Yes, I’ve been to the pond once before.” Bill turned to head off. “I’ll see you ladies soon,” he offered as he departed.
“Apparently you’ll be seeing more than that,” Tory whispered under her breath as Kara elbowed her in the ribs to keep quiet until the Admiral was out of range. Once he was, she turned to the rogue pilot and let loose. “You are insane Starbuck. You know what he’s going to find right?”
“I’m counting on it,” Kara laughed.
“She’s going to kill us. You do realize that don’t you?” Tory whined.
“Maybe, but it will be for a good cause, wouldn’t you agree?” Kara asked. “I mean, don’t you think it’s about time for those two?”
“Okay, yes,” Tory agreed, “but couldn’t you have come up with a plan that was, I don’t know, a little more subtle and tasteful?”
“I don’t do subtle or tasteful, Foster, you should know that by now. Besides, all I care about are results, and I guarantee that this plan is going to get results.”
“Fair enough, but I’m hiding behind you when they come to airlock us.”
“Suit yourself,” Kara shrugged, glad to see that Tory was content to let the plan go forward despite her bitching. “So you wanna go watch the show?”
“What?” Tory spluttered.
“Yeah, come on,” Starbuck said grabbing the other girl by the arm and starting to pull her along. “He doesn’t know the shortcut. If we bust ass, we’ll get there first, and we can stake out a good spot.”
“Now I know they are going to kill us,” Tory whined, though she did not stop following her partner in crime.
“Come on, you want to see the looks on their faces just as badly as I do. Besides, they’ll never know we’re there,” Kara insisted.
Famous last words.
