I've found that through this whole ordeal with my jaw, teeth, mouth, etc. that a few things have really helped me get by.
One is SpongeBob Squarepants. No, seriously. It's just so damn silly that it always makes me smile. It's about one or two levels below being as messed up as Ren and Stimpy. There's something about the show that reminds of R&S, which I grew up watching (maybe that's partly why I'm so amused by gross-out humor). It's those extreme texturized close-ups of SpongeBob or Patrick's face when they're tired or screwed up that reminds me of the Jon Kricfalusi style. I remember when I first discovered the show-- I came home from class sophomore year of college (hmm... in about 2000 or 2001) to find my roommate Jessie sitting on the floor cross-legged, staring up at the TV with a very confused look on her face. She said, "What... is this?!?" So of course I sat down beside her and watched too, and was subsequently hooked. Besides being funny, SpongeBob was there when I woke up from wisdom teeth removal surgery, meaning that they had it playing on the TV as I sat in the recovery chair with my mouth all full of gauze. It calmed me because it was familiar. Therefore, it's only natural that I bought SpongeBob sippy cups for the period following my surgery this week. SpongeBob to the rescue again.
Another is Harry Potter. Now, you might think that Doctor Who would be the obvious choice here. And you'd be right, so that's why I didn't put it, because it's a given-- I'm always thinking about it. Harry Potter, on the other hand, I hadn't been thinking about for a while. Maybe I've become newly obsessed with it because Deathly Hallows Part 1 has recently come out. I've been going back and watching the earlier movies, and reading some of the better fan works (like
Melindaleo's 'Seventh Horcrux'). I'd have brought my Potter books too, but I couldn't fit them all in my luggage. Right now besides Doctor Who, Harry Potter is about as escapist as I can get. I love their world of magic. I'd like to live in a world where I could be repaired with very little fuss with the swish and flick of a magic wand. And I love the characters. They really are very layered. I don't care what some say about J.K.'s writing... it's leaps and bounds better than Stephanie Meyer and how crappily Twilight is written. There's no comparison. J.K. has created this whole massive magical world for me to plunge into headlong, filled with all kinds of whimsical made-up words and creatures. I'm very happy to get lost in the wizarding world any day or night.
Potter can change the way you see your world and make you wonder about any unseen magic you might be missing out on. Also when we got to the place we're staying here in Santa Barbara, I immediately noticed the cupboard under the stairs! So what did I do? I climbed into it and thought, "So THIS is what it felt like to be Harry Potter living at Privet Drive!" There was even some family bickering to match. Aw, bless. (Haha, no, I know I have it about 100 times better than Harry on Privet Drive.) But you get what I'm saying. Cupboard under the stairs magical, etc.
And the view outside my window is so pretty that there is magic in that as well.
