For the theme #4 of 30_kisses, ‘our distance and that person’, though in this case it’s more ‘those people’ plural.

I would like to thank Raj, as usual, for her help. I would also like to credit my workplace for playing too much Brian Adams.

This fic does fit into Charlie!verse (introduced here), though it's not essential to have read the other part to understand this. Just know that all of Roy's subordinates have gone into hiding after Episode 51 (and yes, Roy can still see fine in this future). Roy and Havoc moved in together up North and found a puppy in their yard, whom they named Charlie.

“Nice sunset,” Roy commented, kicking his feet out in front of him on the old wooden porch in front of the Havoc family’s house. Charlie, their pet dog, snuffled at his feet and rolled over.

“All the same if you grew up watching them,” Jean grinned, taking a sip from the glass of water his mother had given him, concerned that her only son ‘looked a little dehydrated’.

“Boys, dinner’s almost ready!” Esther Havoc called from inside the house.

“Okay, Ma!” Havoc shouted over his shoulder, sighing a little, “She still thinks I’m a kid.”

“You’ll never detangle from those apron strings, Havoc,” Mustang chuckled.

“Yeah, yeah... you just like her because she spoils you, Boss.”

“How could I not like a woman who produced such a fine young man?” Mustang snorted, and Havoc snorted back, “Well, you can hardly say you don’t love her, Jean.”

“Yeah... I miss her because we’re so far away, you know? When we were enlisted I could visit her easy...”

“Homesick, Jean?”

“Only a little,” Havoc smiled humourlessly, “Same old sunset, same old people, same old family store, but... yeah, I suppose I miss it a little.”

“And to think you originally joined the army for a little adventure.”

“And to help clean this place up after the War, too,” Jean added, “I suppose I do miss it. And I miss my Ma.”

“I can understand that,” Roy replied. Charlie put his head on Roy’s knee, and Roy scratched him behind the ears.

“You never really talk about your family much, Roy,” Havoc pointed out.

“My mother and father passed away a few years ago,” Roy murmured, still absently scratching Charlie’s ears, “I was their youngest child by eight years and their only son. My three older sisters are all married and live at opposite ends of the country to one another.”

“Ever visit them?” Havoc questioned, looking at his lover curiously.

“When I’m in the area, I suppose,” Roy replied, “We were never really close. They were all born within two years of one another and they’re all girls. The age and gender gap was a little hard to bridge. What about you?”

“Huh? What do you mean?” Havoc looked bemused as Roy looked over at him. Charlie, apparently having had enough of Roy’s scratching, wagged his tail and trotted over the Jean for a pat.

“Your family. I know about Esther, of course... have you got any other immediate family?”

“My Ma moved here from the city to marry my Pa. He was in the army, got killed in a hostage situation just before I was born, and Ma never remarried. Don’t have any siblings, obviously. My paternal grandfather died a few months before I enlisted, couldn’t get medicine for him because of the war, but he taught me to smoke before he went,” Havoc chuckled, sipping his glass of water again. Charlie, apparently upset at being ignored, whined at his feet and tried to slide his nose under the armrest of the chair and onto his master’s lap.

Roy nodded and turned his attention back to the sunset. Jean stared at him for a moment and reached down to pat Charlie, who curled around his legs in response.

“It’s strange, you know.”

“What is?” Roy asked.

“That we’ve known each other for this long and never asked all this, you know?”

“I suppose,” Roy said slowly, “Though does it really matter?”

“I guess not,” Jean replied, “I just wanted to know about your family.”

“Not much to know, though we’re certainly nowhere near as close as you and your mother are.”

“Hey, you know Ma cares about you, right Roy?”

“Yes...”

“And you know that Charlie cares about you?”

“... He’s a dog, Jean. He cares about his food bowl,” Roy said, trying to fend off a barrage of licks from said dog at the same time.

“And you know I care about you, Roy?”

“I would certainly hope so,” Roy responded, curious as to where Jean was going.

“Well, we can be like your family, right?”

Roy stared at his lover for a moment, and then laughed softly. Jean looked hurt for the briefest of moments, and as Roy opened his mouth to reply Esther called all three of them from inside the house.

“Boys? It’s dinner time!”

“Okay, Ma!” Havoc shouted back, standing up and heading towards the door with Charlie at his heels; before he could open it, Roy grabbed his hand and turned him away from the door and back towards the dying sunset.

“What’s the matter, Roy?”

Roy slid his hand up Jean’s arm, across his shoulder and to the nape of his neck, and then pulled him down for a kiss. Jean barely had time to respond before it ended, but Roy prevented him from pulling away even after it did.

“You... all of you,” Roy said, reaching down to grasp his lover’s hand, “Already, even before then...”

Jean smiled down at Roy and pulled him closer for a brief hug before letting him go. Charlie paced anxiously around their legs, waiting to go inside.

“I know, Roy,” Havoc murmured, voice muffled against the older man’s shoulder.

They stood there for a moment, until Charlie started scratching at the door, wanting to go inside. Slipping apart and heading inside together, hands still clasped, both Roy and Jean felt the moment begin to stretch on forever.
