It had taken all of Hawkeye’s courage to find herself baring her own scarred flesh to nervous golden eyes. She couldn’t remember being so ashamed of the array on her back since the days of the Ishvar War, and even then when she had known her father’s art had caused the loss of so many lives, she did not feel the ache and raw nervousness that accompanied the emotional attachment and weight that her relationship with this man carried.

Back in the days of her relationship with Mustang (she loved him; still loved him, for all of the burden he carried, but she wasn’t entirely sure if that love had ever carried anything more than what great loyalty and friendship she owed to him and in that light she refused to deem it ‘romance’) she had felt unashamed to bare herself to dark eyes and feel no judgement as he pulled her against him and ran his tongue along faded, scarred lines of crimson while she lay there and mused. Was the jumping of her stomach, the prickling of her skin indications of physical worship that could only be attributed to the likes of love? She still wasn’t sure, and even when Riza found herself thinking back to see if there was anything to be savoured from her relationship with Mustang, the realization dawned on her that perhaps there was once something, but the difference between love and attraction was a feeling that sparked out with time if it wasn’t fulfilled.

She still went to headquarters every day with the intention of serving a man whom she loved, but felt no remnants of attraction to. They had both moved on, and no longer did she feel her heart take pace at his touch.

With him, she had felt neither shame nor nervous pang when she undressed, and perhaps that was the difference; she found herself caring far too much about what Edward would say and think. Was this good or was this bad?

It took her a moment to realize that her anxiety was not only matched but bettered by the nerviness in Edward’s eyes as she slowly worked on the buttons of her simple button-down white blouse. Perhaps it was simply the strain of inexperience or the fact that he could tell that she was unnerved by the thought of him seeing something that bound her so to Mustang.

She knew he wouldn’t think less of her because of the array on her back, but her fingers still trembled as she fumbled over the last button of her blouse and then shrugged out of the simple cotton garment; Riza choked down a forced laugh as Edward’s eyes widened accordingly and the slightest tinge of pink graced his cheeks.

“Riza... you... you’re...”

“Hush,” she silenced him, and his mouth snapped shut as he realized she needed to hear it no more than she felt the need to justify what he was about to see; by now, the blond’s nervous compliments and stunned, careful actions as they got further in and found it harder and harder to breathe were enough to speak to her volumes of love.

She watched him undo the buttons on his own shirt and listened for the soft click, click, click of his automail fingers scuffling with the plastic buttons, and took this time to reach behind her and undo the hooks on her bra one by one, with a heavier air of silence than Ed with his sudden awkward actions and quiet, stunned adoration but with the same play upon her nerves.

“Alright?” he asked, and she nodded, too preoccupied to deal with the lump in her throat as he moved towards her and threaded hands with opposing measures of soft heat around her back, cold steel playing down her spine and feeling the rough bumps of the scars and coarse scarlet lines against her back.

“Do you want to...”

“I can’t see why I’d need to look,” he replied against her neck, cold fingers tracing the lines in such a dire contrast to Mustang’s omnipotent heat but not at all uncomfortable, and she suddenly found herself relaxing against him, all scars of nervousness leaving her as he pressed her down onto clean white sheets while leaving soft pink illusions of pink down her neck as he kissed her.

“You’re still you without him.”

Finally, she felt her actions fully justified. Pulling Edward closer and pressing a kiss against his lips, Riza opened herself to him and found herself invoked by the art of drowning, falling away from heat as they made love.

Finally, the pair found themselves completely freed from bindings of scarlet.
