[She pauses, as if she were trying to figure out the right way to go on

A conscious desire is unnecessary - countless factors can easily override a claim this weak. Do not dismiss man's basic nature so easily; the moment he moves upon instinct alone, he is no different than a hunting beast on a blood trail.
