Wwwwaalleeeee!

Took Duncan to see Wall-E today. Hands down Pixar's best film since The Incredibles, if not their best work yet. Wall-E (whom I shall refer to henceforth as "Wally"), is utterly adorable in an "ET-but-cuter" way. The way he follows Eve around trying to impress her (and Eve completely ignoring him in response) in the first act is convincing enough to make you think he's got a human brain in his chassis. And later on, Eve's scolding made them seem like a real couple. Been a long time since I've seen such cute robots!

The movie touches on issues ranging from rampant consumerism, environmental responsibility, obesity and complacency. It's inspired me to get serious about getting into shape. If you've seen it, you'll know exactly why. On a lesser scale, it's inspired me to learn how to cook a wider range of foods. Again, you'll know why if you've seen it.

Without so much as a fart joke, Wall-E is a family film done right. It reminds me of why there are certain films I will not see (one of which sounds like a dessert pastry and another that involves a type of medieval structure); it's possible to make a great movie with a strong story and characters without being utterly vulgar. Kudos when said characters can't actually speak! I know there is plenty of R-rated material I enjoy, but I guess when you share a roof with an eleven year-old you tend to consider such things more often.

On a minor note, I have a feeling Chihuahuas will be very popular this Christmas, much to the ire of small dog haters everywhere. I predict steel-toed boot sales will rise in response.

Everyone needs to go see this film so I can talk about it without spoiling everything. Go go go! And may the spork be with you! (again, see the film)

EDIT: I forgot to mention the short film "Presto" before the movie, which is really a cartoon in every sense of the word. The cartoon demonstrates how well the folks at Pixar understand timing and sight gags in animation. It had me guffawing as well as any Buggs Bunny or Disney short ever did.
