Government: The Universal Guardian
In a way, nobody ever leaves their Mommy. Even as one grows of adult age, there is still a higher authority to provide, protect, and be provisionary. This authority is called government. Every reputable country has one. This is how the United State’s Mommy runs the house.
For interests’s sake we will call the American government Lois. It is Lois’ duty to protect her home. She does so by supplying and recruiting the nation with specialized forces such as the Marines, Army, Coast Guard, National Guard, Air Force, and Navy. It is Lois’ job to ensure the safety of her children by utilizing these protective sectors as specialists of their respective field and fight off potential offending nations or terror groups in times of crisis. Lois can also discipline her own children. If citizens of the United States become unruly in the masses or become menaces to society, the government is entitled to take police action and arrest or punish offenders as they see fit. The translation is a proverbial spanking. In the Untied States, a common form of punishment for citizens is a time out, or jail sentence. Jail terms are normally linked with the severity of the crime. Sometimes fines are assigned, and in a few states, citizens become candidates for execution.
Like Mothers, governments area also responsible to teach us, provide goods and services, and manage our “allowance”. Lois does this by providing free education through public schooling. All American children are eligible for education through the state. Lois is required as a caretaker to parks. Businesses in the United States are hardly ever concerned with public goods because they seldom bring profit to the companies. Factories do not often show great concern for the output of pollution because the purification machinery is expensive and doesn’t bring in revenue. Therefore it is a mother’s job to ensure that factories clean up their rooms and keep the environment nice for others inhabiting the living space. Many governments aid their citizens with public services. Public services are institutions such as libraries, homeless shelters, welfare and low income housing. To successfully run these public services, the government has to collect the “allowance” from the US citizens. This is done through taxation. With taxation, Lois calculates a certain total to withdraw from citizens of the household. Taxes take in consideration how many people are dependent on you, your income and other attributes of living. That money goes back into the government to pay for household projects and programs.
If you have just turned eighteen and figure you’re finally free from a greater power, this isn’t the case. There is always someone or something looming over your shoulder to ensure that you are alive, breathing, behaving, thriving (to some extent), and paying your allowance to Lois.
