Warning, following fic is a deathfic. PG-13, just to be safe for referenced violence. Prompt 48. Guilty. No pairing.
Guilty:
He was spattered with blood.
His knuckles were bruised, and his right hand felt broken, but none of the blood belonged to him.
It belonged to the dead man at his feet.
He didn't know his name. Did even know his codename. He was just some guy. Some guy that didn't get away. He failed, hit the wrong target. He couldn't be allowed to leave.
So he didn't. Now he would never leave. And that was fine.
Kaito turned back to the other body, crumpled on the other side of the rooftop, hair gleaming from the now dimmed floodlights he'd used earlier to send the task force on a wild goose chase.
This one stayed. He always stayed.
Kneeling next to him, the thief gently touched his shoulder, unable to see the bullet hole from this angle, but unable to miss the blood spreading from his body.
"God, Guru..." He choked, pulling his hand back. He missed! Why did he have to miss? If his cardgun had been a mere centimeter to the right, the assassin's gun arm wouldn't have flown to the side, trigger pulled reflexively. "He was aiming for me, Guru, I'm so sorry, this is my fault." He might as well have killed both of them.
He rocked in place, next to his friend, poker face breaking in a rush of hot tears, guilt choking him until he couldn't even breathe.
The task force was returning, he could hear them running up the stairs, realising they'd been led off and hoping he hadn't escaped yet. What a surprise they were in for.
Brushing Hakuba's bangs froms his face, he didn't bother getting up. He couldn't handle this anymore. The stakes rose too high, and he lost. He couldn't leave now, even if it meant jailtime and Nakamori hating him. It was too much.
A hand fisted into his jacket and pulled him down, Kaito's eyes flying wide open in disbelief.
"Not...dead...yet." Hakuba growled weakly, voice barely a whisper. The thief let out a small hysterical laugh, covering his mouth. "Get...away. Go home. I'll be...fine."
Kaito sobbed again, pulling off his jacket and wrapping Hakuba's arms around it. "Guru...don't die on me. Please."
The detective smiled. "Have to...catch you...first." He pushed at Kaito's arm, clutching at Kid's jacket. "Go."
The thief nodded and stood up, slinking into the shadows the very second Nakamori opened the door. He stuck around and watched as Hakuba was taken away, the sirens of the ambulance that arrived loud and piercing in the sudden silence.
He stood as he watched the cleanup and forensics crew finish their investigation, tears still streaming down his cheeks. This was one mistake he could never make up, he knew. Nothing was the same anymore.
Feedback is much loved, as usual. <3
