BACKGROUND:
Dr. Temperance Brennan [Born Joy Keenan], is the daughter of Max and Ruth Keenan, two people who were considered federal offenders, and were career criminals that were highly sought after by the federal government. After the Keenans messed up a, highly complex robbery scheme, they were forced to take up new identities to protect not only them, but their son [Russ] and daughter. It is after that incident when the Keenans were now known as the Brennan family. At the age of 14, Temperance was starting to manifest her abilities. While her parents were slightly fazed at the fact that she had these abilities to begin with, they still encouraged her to get better with them her abilities, even getting a tutor to help her out.
Then, when Temperance was 15, Max and Ruth's underground associates finally track them down. Ruth, fearing for her children's lives, convinced Max to go with her and abandon the children, so that their hunters would go straight for them instead of needlessly killing her children - and all this happened only several weeks before Christmas. Temperance, devastated and confused as to why her parents would do such a thing, takes out her frustrations on her elder brother, Russ. He himself was only 19 at the time, and got tired of her emotional lashings, and left her before the New Year came in. So, she ends up in the foster care system, going from house to house, before she is able to leave the system when she becomes of age. In one such home, she was told that if she ever broke a dish, she would be punished severely by being sealed off by herself. She did actually try her best to do not break a dish, but the water she was meant to wash the dishes in was simply too hot to used, and the dish was dropped before she was able to do anything about it. The end result, was that she was stuck in a trunk for two days straight. She would rarely tell anyone else about this experience, but was able to somehow tell it two individuals, breaking down a bit and being quite emotional.
After she became of age, she basically considered herself an orphan, thinking that both her parents somehow died due to the suddenness of how they dropped out of her life. She attended Northwestern University, graduated, and went on to gain her doctorate degree in forensic anthropology. Throughout this time, she became somewhat secluded, intensely focusing on her studies and building up a wall between herself and others, preferring not to have much contact in order to not feel vulnerable enough to get hurt. All this did was to cause her to be rather socially inept, and prevented her from enjoying things that most people take for granted, such as popular cultural knowledge that she could have potentially picked up. Just because she was a rather socially awkward person does not mean to say that she didn't have a few romantic interests from time to time, even involving herself with her professor, but they somehow were never meant to last. It was also during this time that she was able to meet Dr. Xavier when he gave one of his guest lectures on human and mutant co-existence. Dr. Xavier took some interest in her, and told her that she was indeed something special, though she should work out on the things that she knew she had inside. He also offered her a place at his institute if she ever so wanted to do so, though she declined, explaining that she was close to attaining her degree. He only nodded and said that he understood, though he only told her how she could get a hold of him if she ever felt the need to do so.
After getting her doctorate, she was able to get a job at the Jeffersonian, working in conjunction with the FBI to help solve murder cases that required her, and her team's expertise. Due to her extensive background with forensic anthropology, she had been able to make a series of mystery novel books that proved to be quite successful enough to grant her the means to have a better life and lifestyle. She still continued to work for the Jeffersonian despite the fact that she could leave the job and retire early.
During this time, she had Zack Addy [a promising graduate student of hers] work for her as her intern. After he earned his degree, he was able to work for the Jeffersonian himself, now as her colleague. An accident in the lab one day caused Zack to have to go to the hospital, apparently because of an accident due to his own mutant powers, and she felt a bit at a loss due to his absence, even more so because he also took a sabbatical from his work, and any other temporary interns that worked for her didn't seem to feel quite right.
She later on kept on working with her partner, Seeley Booth, and the rest of her team, though now the whole political climate going against mutants like her were starting to show, and she started to feel the strain when there were new cases where it involved people that were mutants that were killed by people due to their intense feelings of hatred. It struck a chord with her, especially since she learned that not only did Zack go to Xavier's Institute after leaving the hospital due to his mutant abilities, but that her best friend, Angela, also left for the same place to follow Zack.
Taking this into consideration, as well as the strain that she felt at work due to who was being murdered, and for what reasons, she remembered what had happened during her graduate-study years, and contacted Dr. Xavier. Now, she was going to leave her work at the Jeffersonian in order to come into his institute, this time to teach. She would continue to work for the Jeffersonian in extreme cases where her expertise was desperately needed, but otherwise, will focus on her work as a teacher.
PERSONALITY:
She is a believer of the things that she can see, touch, and prove scientifically. Being an hyper-rational, this means that everything can be explained by science in one way or another. Being a rational, and thinking that science is the way to go, she discards religion as nothing much more than wishful thinking or pure myth. She can respect people to a certain point when it comes to religion, and can even tolerate some religious talk from others, though they would have to be rather close to her in a way that she can just overlook it enough. To get to that point, they would have to be pretty darn close, because Temperance isn't a genius when it comes to human emotions.
She is quite emotionally stunted more due to her hyper-rationalism, and doesn't show much emotion herself either, unless it's some of the basics. And even then, it is more when she is surprised or confused about something that she does not get. As for recognizing emotions in others, she can barely distinguish one from the other, unless there is a strong sense about it being thrown her way, like anger. Otherwise, yes - pure fail. She can't even tell if someone is serious or not when they're being sarcastic or just plain joking about something. She is liable to take things literally unless someone tells her that they were indeed and in fact joking about something, and will try to make a mental note of that for use in the future.
Also, despite being a genius and being strong in her own field of study, she is horribly lacking much in the ways and means of popular culture. Since she had been reading and studying enough to get her doctorate degree, she didn't get into TV, Radio, or anything much. Hence, when someone makes a highly obvious pop-culture reference, she is more liable to give the speaker a blank stare and wonder what the definition or reference is, comes up short and says, "I don't know what that means." There are rare times when she is able to pick up on it, and gets happy when she actually gets it.
There are only few things that will make her actually be emotional, and those are the buttons that one really shouldn't touch with her, because as a hyper-rational, feelings are exactly the opposite: irrational. She tries to not deal with her feelings because they are more of a means for her to get even more hurt through one way or another, and she does not want that. If she does talk about one of her 'buttons' then there is more of a chance for her to show that more delicate side of her that is rarely seen, though she would only do that to people with whom she feels comfortable with speaking of such things. And even if she has only a couple of best friends, she would prefer to not show it to many. Thus, you can see how selective she is of whom she can bear to see her actually cry, and who she cannot think of crying in front of.
APPEARANCE:
She is 5'9" tall, pale blue eyes, and shoulder-length light brown hair. Her muscles are quite well-toned due to her years of studying the various forms of martial arts through a number of years. She likes to dress up with business casual clothes at work, though she does not mind dressing up with any given normal one-colored top and jeans while going out. She loves to accessorize her clothing with large bracelets, necklaces, and earrings that match of her looks.
POWERS: Telepathy, Telekinesis, and Psychometry. She has all her abilities quite well defined and developed, seeing as she has had more than eighteen years with them. Her command on her telepathy is well-developed enough, and she is proficient enough to mentally connect with people to transmit and/or receive thoughts to or from a certain individual, or trying to influence someone by mentally nudging them to think in a certain way. But she can't pick up on people's feelings, because that is more of an empath ability, so she will take what people think or say quite literally, even if they are joking or being sarcastic, unless the other person thinks or says it is otherwise. She is also able to mentally stun any opponent long enough to either help her escape, or take that opportunity to use her expertise in martial arts to give them a rather thorough beating. Her telekinesis is pretty much highly tuned, to the point where she could move something as small as a grain of salt with much ease, and in any way that she desires. Conversely, she could also move something rather heavy and move that as she likes, though it would tax her a bit mentally after much continual usage. Due to her telekinesis, she is also able to achieve flight, though this took her a considerable amount of time more to master than did her ability to move other objects.
Her ability with psychometry is her most refined ability of all. So much so, that she is be able to use it without directly touching the object. She is able to project that ability even through anything that is impeding a direct touch, such as a glove she might be using, and still be able to get the history from any given object. Depending on how long the object had been handled, that is how far back she is able to see by using her ability. This particular ability has helped her solve many cases on which she has worked on by piecing together what she can by the objects that were used, or even if she dared to do so [because she would rather go the scientific route instead of actually watching the last moments of the life of another individual] extract the information from the deceased. Though again, that's only if she dares to use it on the bones, which means that it is almost never.
ANYTHING ELSE?: She's pretty good with babies. It's crazy, I know, but she has a certain way with them, and they actually like her. Ah, and she speaks several languages quite fluently.
