When They Kiss They Spit White Noise

This October was meant to be a month filled with shows, drinking, parties, and friends. What it wound up being was much less than that, but as of today it all feels ok. I missed TV on the Radio a couple weeks ago, along with Drive by Truckers and Mark Kozelek. We've been flat broke for weeks, and luck has not been nice to us.

Last night Alison and I went to the Magic Stick to see The Hold Steady. Brian Stout went with us, which was nice since we never get to hang out anymore. We spent the early hours of the show downstairs at the bar drinking Strohs and watching the Tigers choke and lose the game to the Cards. It was a bummer, but as The Hold Steady went on it got much much better.

The crowd was surprisingly small, but extremely enerjetic. As the set went on I gradually got more and more buzzed, and more and more into the music. I wound up singing every word with my fists in the air. At one point, the band opened 3 or 4 beers and shook them up with their thumbs over the spouts, as if it were champagne and we'd just won some imaginary sporting event. The guitar player, with foot on the monitor in mid-solo, leaned in and took a swig from the beer of a random hand in the front row. By the end of the set, most of the crowd was onstage with the band. Brian was feeding his beer to the piano player while he pounded away. It was one of those shows you talk about years later.

This morning was not so kind to me. The headache I had was so bad that I nearly threw up. Somehow Audrey fell asleep watching cartoons at about 10. She usually doesn't take a nap until around 2, and even then it's tough to get her to sleep. This was a miracle. I slept right next to her on the couch, and by the time she woke up at noon I had completely slept off the hangover. Aside from the fact that I haven't showered yet, I now feel like a million bucks.

On a sidenote, Citizens Bank is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Weather Ball. It's been updated and cleaned, and supposedly shines brighter now than in twenty years. Click here for the history of the Weather Ball and how it was made. Pretty interesting.
