...and haven't heard of Susan Boyle and her unforgettable performance on "Britain's Got Talent", go watch!

Like many, I found Ms. Boyle's performance inspiring. But in the week since she took YouTube by storm, I've seen some responses like this one that seem a bit too eager to squash that feeling of inspiration with comments like:

Oh thanks for the info! On YouTube it's being billed as some sort of British version of "American Idol", so I thought it was exclusively a music show.

no that was Pop Idol, sadly its gone now since Simon came to the States and worked on American Idol...

This reminded me of The Gong Show, which was popular in the U.S. in the 1970's. Most of the acts were terrible, and the moderator stopped them as soon as he realized they were bad, by sounding a large gong. I thought they were setting us up for that, as they had the men by the curtain jeering and making rude comments. I didn't watch the show very much, and I don't know if any of the acts were actually very good. But this woman gave such a marvelous and moving performance! I would have been pleasantly surprised, regardless of whether she was young or old, or how she looked, or where she performed.
