Early morning on the day after my last exam, I had to go back to school and clean out my locker. As I was standing in front of it, making mental notes about what’s garbage and what’s not, my best friend Cindy walked out of a classroom nearby. When we looked at each other, it made me kinda sad. This was the main locker we shared throughout grade 12 (we had another one in the next hallway, but that was only to throw our bags into when we went to the library.) We proceeded to empty the debris of a grade 12 mess that remained. Old assignments, old food, some CDs, and a single glove from the winter time. It was funny, because despite the sad mood, we still couldn’t resist having one last argument in school about who the glove belonged to. After all was said and done, we walked through the hallways, and suddenly our feet felt so heavy. I had to run a few errands concerning the prom video, which by the way I’m so glad is out of the way. Then we picked up our graduation ceremony tickets for our friends and family, and for the last time as school mates, headed out the front doors of Cardinal Newman High School.

Admittedly, the last four years didn’t rush by in a blur. They felt like four years, whether that’s a good thing or not. I don’t have distinct memories of each, but I can relate a certain feeling to the different years. Well into grade 9, I felt unstable and uncomfortable in the new high school environment. I wanted nothing else but to be back in good old St. Maria Goretti, where 10 years of my life flew by. High school was intimidating, because I now had peers who looked and acted like adults. As the grade 9 year progressed, I began to make new friends, and my appreciation for the new environment grew. Christmas season of ’02 was spent juggling a handful of new emotions that got me going crazy. I had reunited with someone special, and now I was in the game, and it was high school! Big deal much!? That turned out to be a success, and ‘Aren’ was born. March 15, 2003, I began a long journey with Warren. School grew on me, and grade nine turned out to be a successful year of getting to know new friends, winning gold at the TD’s for cross country, and making it to regionals for track. It was pretty sick.

Grade 10 was a more mellowed out year. When it came to extracurriculars, I was more involved I guess. I joined track, cross country, chaplaincy, and the leadership group. It was the first year I was sent to Camp Olympia with 7 other kids, for free! Hahah embarrassing it was, but great. When I think of grade 10, I think about all of the double dates and quadrouple dates that went on. Good times! It’s true what they say, groups are formed in grade 10. Everyone began to do their own things and mind their own business. Everyone had a group or a best friend by then, but from what everyone heard, the ultimate test of friendships in high school was to get through grade 11. But who cared! We were just having fun. Academically, grade 10 was just like grade 9, and things were awesome. I didn’t have a job yet, so my Friday nights were amazingly spent with great friends. Definitely a year to remember.

Things took a turn for the worst in grade 11. That was the time of a great depression-like state for me. This year, I focused solely on school, cross country, and chaplaincy. Work began to be my only date on Friday evenings, and homework took up every other night. Friends were still there, but everyone else felt the big difference in work load. Sad to say, but I did drift from a lot of people. My high school experience looked doomed to failure. Blah. Even that summer sucked.

Grade 12 was so sweet! From the first day of grade 12, I was already anticipating what’s going down 4 days from now. Graduation/Prom fever was spread around the kids like no tomorrow. Now, every assignment was done with extra special care, because universities and colleges would be weeding out the weaklings out based on every final grade we made. It was definitely a stressful year … VERY stressful, but I made it! First semester homeroom with Aprille was sick. Us talking about how bad we wanted out, and how we wanted second semester to come quick. Projects in exercise science were stressful but turned out to be a success thanks to John and Warren. Philosophy with Krista and Laiza was great, because hearing their own philosophies on life and love was really interesting ahhaha. My second semester changed from the best semester possible, to the toughest. Originally I had world history, religion, and family studies, all with great teachers. Unfortunately, I had those classes switched around to include chemistry and math because I needed those credits. I made it though! I MADE IT! I’M DONE! I was planning on getting to Kinesiology at York. I was so happy to receive my acceptances into Kin/Sci, Kin/Arts and Social Work at Ryerson (Random, I know). I worked hard to keep my average up this year. Chemistry was tolerable because I had good friends in class with me. Thank goodness for Angelo, and his snacks. Data was fun with my new friend Sean. I only started talking to him this semester, out of four years in high school. Whispering about our weekend stories was definitely something I looked forward to everyday. I also started talking to Kaiser, Leo, and Herve … 3 people who I never really talked to before this semester. They made class bareable because they’re so damn funny. I also tutored Jennifer, a girl in grade 9. We formed a wicked friendship as well, and I’m going to miss laughing with her. Whenever she made a mistake, it always took me forever to get her to see where she was going wrong. When she finally realized it was the smallest thing, she’d laugh so much. Good times. Cross country was sick this year, only because the girls had cars so we could drive to the meets on our own. I was on the student council which is why I was at every school function. The Halloween dance was a joke. But semi and the much video dance was sick! Even being in the commercial that airs on much music every so often was pretty wicked. Organizing grad night at Wonderland, and being on the Prom Comittee were hard work, but definitely worth it.

So…
High school was definitely a journey worth remembering.
Prom was so awesome! I’m very pleased with how everything
went, and everyone looked beautiful.

These times of our lives are really flying by,
and I’m really anticipating the fun and freedom of the
summer months. It’s looking great so far : )

Mere words don't do Sept. 2002 - June 2006 justice.
I was truly fortunate to have a great high school
experience, meeting great people, and having the
opportunities to do new things. I haven't graduated
yet, but when I do, I know I'll be able to say,
high school was unforgettable!

Bring on the good times, Mr. Sun!
