Computer issues

The power cord on my laptop is acting up. I have to fiddle with the middle connector to get power to reach the laptop. (The battery hasn't held a good charge for a while.) It's a 4-5 year old HP Pavilion so I'm not sure how much it would cost to replace it. Being the computer is as old as it is already, it's about due to be replaced so I have

If I do go the power cord route, I'd probably go local because then I can get it and use the machine. Tonight, I couldn't get it to work at all and within and hour (I left it plugged in to try on and off), the box on the cord was hotter than I ever remember it being so I think there's a short in there or something. :(
