Home Pt.1

Sometimes Nick thinks that the creatures have the right idea about humans.  He had just closed a case where a serial killer had been killing single mothers and their children after making the children watch their parent die.  He was still having nightmares about it.

They had caught the man eventually, had caught him in the act and there was no way he would get off.  He was going to jail and Nick seriously doubted he'd last a week before the other inmates got him.  It wouldn't be enough.  Wouldn't be enough for Nick and the other police officers that had to see the bodies of the women and children he had killed.  Wouldn't be enough for the frightened families that wouldn't let their children go outside, too afraid to lose them.  And it certainly wouldn't be enough for Emma, the twelve year old child who they had managed to save, whose mother they hadn't.  Emma who would go to an orphanage or a foster home because her mom was all she had.

Emma who is a Lausenschlange, whose face moves between human and other.  Emma who is a scared young girl that fears him because he is Grimm but who she won't move five feet from because he saved her.

Nick feels oddly protective as Emma holds his hand tightly and does her best to answer the social worker's questions about her family.  No she doesn't know who her dad was.  No she doesn't have any other relitives.  No her mom didn't have any close friends.  Nick can see where this is going, that without choices this little girl will end up in foster care and be forgotten there.

"I would like to adopt her," Nick finds himself saying to the social worker as Emma's hand tightens around his with every question she is asked.  The social worker looked surprised for a moment and Nick couldn't blame her.  He was pretty surprised at it himself, but those words are what got him out of his own personal hell and into the life of his Aunt Marie.  She had said those words and his whole life had changed.

Nick knows that Emma should have a choice in where she goes.  "Do you want to come to live with me?" he asks her.  "You don't have to," he assures "no one will force you, but I would like for you to consider it."  Emma nods and gives him a tentitive smile.  Nick smiles back and gives Emma's hand a small squeeze before the social worker starts asking more questions.

He knows that there are risks for both himself and for Emma if he does this.  He is hunted and those he allows close to him are targets, but if the only other option is for this little girl to be placed in foster care then he will fight to keep her.  Nick knows that the fact that he is single and a police officer is a mark against him and that he will have to prove that he can adequately provide for a child before they will allow him to adopt her, but the fact that she already trusts him to some degree will make the social worker bend the rules and allow Emma to stay with him until the adoption goes through.

They are going to need to get Emma's things and Nick doesn't want to leave Emma here.  He doesn't think that taking her back to the appartment that she and her mother had lived in would be a good idea either.  As  the social worker finishes asking questions Nick spots Hank talking to Captian Renard.  He looked over at Emma who was still attached to his hand and decided that he would get the necessites now and talk with Hank or Wu about going to Emma's house for her personal items tomorrow.

Nick had already given his statement and had been told that tomorrow at 10:00AM was the soonest that he should be in to do the paperwork.  He is grateful for the late start because it is already late and Emma looks like she is falling asleep standing.  He picks her up gently and places her in the passenger seat of his car.  "Ready to get some sleep?" he asks.  Emma nods even though she is drifting to sleep right there.

Nick takes her home.

X

Nick dreams. He is eight again and his foster father is whipping his hands with the belt because he left fingerprints on his foster mother's clean kitchen counters, and he nine and told he is not allowed to sit at the table because if he is going to act like a dog always running around then he can eat off the floor like one. He is back at the scene of his first murder and he can always hear the corpse asking him why Nick couldn't save her and then her face is Emma's and he is too late. Nick wakes up.

When he and Juliet had first gotten together, Nick had woken her screaming when he had nightmares. He learned not to scream.

Nick got off the couch and went to check on Emma. He doesn't figure that her dreams will be anymore pleasant than his. As he reaches the door he can hear whimpering and pained noises coming from the small figure on the bed. "Emma," Nick says firmly and loudly. "Wake up Emma."

Emma bolts upright and looks paniced and lost for a few moments. Nick can see the moment that she remembers as her face crumples and she starts crying. Emma is in pain, she is curled up in a tight little ball and crying her eyes out, but the only sounds she is making is little gasping noises when she has to breathe in.

Nick is at the side of the bed instantly but he doesn't reach to touch, doesn't sit on the bed until Emma holds one of her hands out. Once she does Nick wraps himself around her and rocks them back and forth slowly. He humms wordless and low and doesn't tell her the little lies that he had been told. He tells her instead that her mother loved her and loves her still and that he will protect her to the best of his abilities. Nick holds her close and lets her cry until the tears have stopped and she falls asleep on his shoulder. He moves until he is leaning against the head of the bed and stays awake holding her until the sun comes up, and he feels his eyes slip closed. He doesn't remember his dreams.

When he wakes up at nine that morning he gently shakes Emma awake and somehow manages to get them both dressed, fed, and ready to go to the station. Nick isn't willing to leave Emma yet and hasn't had the chance to make alternate arrangements, so she is coming to work with him today. After he finishes the paperwork for this case he is going to put in for the vacation time he has stored up so he can sort out what the next things he needs to do are.
He knows that he will have to speak with social services and get the legal part of adopting her dealt with.  He needs to add Emma to his insurance and get her birth certificate, social security card, and medical documents so he can add them to his files.  Emma will also need furniture, a bed and drawers at the least, and that means that Nick needs to clean the guest bedroom/storage area out so it can be Emma's room.

He has a lot he needs to get done in the next few weeks and has a whole new appreciation for Aunt Marie.  She had never seemed too busy to talk with him when he had first gone to live with her even though she must have had all of the same tasks to accomplish.  Nick hoped that he could do the same for Emma.
