Been a couple years since I last played
Pathfinder. It was the early part of the
Legacy of Fire. I played a Paladin of
Desna. A Lawful Good servant of a Chaotic Good Deity. I think I've role played him well, careful not to fall into
Lawful Stupid territory. It's simple. Choose Good over Law when it comes down to it. Also, freedom and liberty is part of Desna's Domains. Lawful Evil tyranny is something Lawful Good should always oppose.
I came across
this recent discussion thread on Paladins and Alignment. Snow Crash has the followng to say on August 19th:
One of my players had a LG paladin of
Calistria and I have so far not had a problem with it. She is a prostitute of the church and as long as she puts her church's interests ahead of her own and does what the church and her superiors demand of her then I have no problem with it.
She overseas disputes and puts peoples rights to revenge at the forfront. An eye for an eye. She promotes lust and polygamy among the populace. She sleeps around and she tries to right any wrongs she sees being done by helping those avenged to seek a suitable revenge in fitting with the slight against them.
That was an eye opener of sorts. Calistria and Desna are both Chaotic female deities with overlapping followers. On a side note, it turns out the Viking-like Ulfen barbarians of the cold North will just as likely as any Romani-like Varisian draw the wings of Desna over their hearts during an impending crisis where luck may be needed to supplement brawn and skill. I read it so in the Pathfinder novel "
Winter Witch". (That was a page turner; finsihed it in a day.)
Still, my character is likely to be rare. Paladins are rare in general, so it seems especially among Chaotic Good Goddesses. Then again, the temple my character uncovered around Katapesh would be a rarity in itself. Most of Desna's temples are roadside shrines, akin to a Shinto Jizo statue. My charater was working on restoring the actual walk-in temple to be styled like the old
Missions the Spanish set up along the California coast. Desna's porfolio includes travel and travelers need to rest. Also, if Desna didn't have Paladins, who else would take up the blade to kill Gnolls and other spawn of
Lamashtu or
Rovagug?
PS: Pathfinder comes from open source, so they have their own open source.
