Dean reports to Steven that our fondly-nicknamed undergaduate break day, "suicide prevention day" used to go by the (possibly more bittersweet!) name "fall-in-love day."
This week is the week after fall-in-love weekend, and just before Valentine's Wednesday, so I shall discuss some topics regarding love.
(a) Lola commissioned me to do a sketch of her and her boyfriend Will, to give to him as a cute romantic present for Val. day. Hey, cool, she likes my art :-) it makes me very happy to see people get all giddy about my quick 2D interpretations of them. I guess that not only are the drawings aesthetically appealing, but they capture something about the people that they like. Sweet, mission accomplished! At the same time, I wasn't even planning on doing anything so sweet for Steven ;-P but when I do make sketches for people, it's the fact that they come from me that I think make them a good present to my loved ones, not the fact that they look cool (although that's a bonus?). Anyway, the ink drawings I did for Lola look crappy in my opinion, but she loved them! Happy Val. day, Lola, they're my gift to you :-)
(b) I rekindled my love for fresh paints on Saturday night. I mixed up my own soft, deep black out of burnt umber and ultramarine. Finally managed to get pure pigments to play nicely with acrylic medium. Trick is to dissolve them in water v. thoroughly first, and mix in the medium a bit at a time. Still turned out rather mud-like. The consistency and sheen of mud, but not a bad hue. Little wonder, since the umber I'm using is for real dirt from Umbria. Golden says that paints which are highly saturated with pigment will turn out thick and matte. Story checks out re: my color.
(c) I started a portrait of Dedekind, inspired by Jesse Raber's portrait of his own academic interest and object of personal as well as intellectual admiaration (should I say, hero?). Dedekind is certainly my hero, and he epitomizes love in some sense. Bill Tait describes him as a saint. He spent most of his career teaching students, and cleaning up other geniuses' works.
(d) I asked my secret crush to go to the opera with me. Nora has faith in me that he'd have to be crazy to pass up Mozart with me. Thanks for the sentiment, girl, but I'm not sure it's true... He said "maybe." He used the excuse that he has to do schoolwork---it's a toss-up: does he actually like me and want to go out but can't? does he really not want to go out with me, and school is a convenient excuse? bolth???
