chapter six
“Hyung, are you going to finish that?” Changmin asked, dutifully eyeing the food in front of Yoochun.
Changmin was a force to be reckoned with, and so in a split fraction of a second, Yoochun's arms instantly circled the bowl of delicious sumptuous ramen, pulling it away protectively from the evil clutches of the resident food monster.
It never failed to amaze Yoochun how that guy could eat enough for a dozen people and literally have a bottomless pit for a stomach yet still remain so fit. Yoochun felt a tad bit envious. Not that he was going to ever admit that of course.
“You’re not stealing mine Min.” Yoochun said, directing wary narrowed eyes at the maknae. “Go bother Jae.”
Changmin turned to the eldest and moaned under his breath, pleading. “Hyungggggggggg?”
Jaejoong shrugged and lightly pushed his bowl of food towards Changmin. “It’s not like I have any choice.”
“Yay!" Changmin exclaimed with a smile that could match the sun. “You’re the best hyung in the whole world.”
Jaejoong snorted and rolled his eyes, but there was a quickly spreading smile on his lips.
The younger one looked at his hyung and smirked, adding. “Besides, you don’t really like ramen anyway.” he pointed out, immersing his chopsticks into the yummy treat. “I have vivid recollections of you telling me about all the nasty ingredients this baby has, and that I would one day find out I have cancer and die because I happen to like instant food.”
“But eating instant food everyday is bad for your health. You need nutrition Changmin ah.” Jaejoong advised.
“It’s not like I have anyone to cook for me.” Changmin replied but then raised an eyebrow and pointed at his hyung. “Well, you do. But that’s only when you’re feeling inspired, which happens, I don’t know… twice a month.”
“Remind me again why he’s eating out in our apartment?” Yoochun asked, pouting.
Jaejoong lifted a hand in clear dismissal. “Let him be. He doesn’t come over much anyway and he deserves the treat for letting me crash in his backroom this morning.” he said, directing a grateful smile at the younger man. “And Min since you mentioned it…” he pursed his lips as if in deep thought. “I might just cook more frequently for your sake.”
Changmin’s eyes sparkled and was immediately resembling an over eager puppy. “That’d be so awesome!”
“But you’re going to be providing me money for the ingredients mister.” Jaejoong stated firmly.
“Oh of course, naturally.” Changmin nodded, not really minding that he’d be paying. Besides, he had a steady income.
“You know, you two you really give off the mother and son vibe. It’s kinda creepy.” Yoochun said, mid slurp of the ramen.
Jaejoong watched and blanched in disgust. “Chun what did I tell you about talking with food in your mouth?”
“That it’s disgusting.” Yoochun slurped again, louder and Jaejoong glared.
“Then why are you doing it?”
“Because I want to.” he replied grinning, completely unfazed of the dark look his best friend was sending his way.
Jaejoong crossed his arms against his chest and grumbled. “Remind me again why I’m friends with you?”
“Because you love me and you can’t live without me.” Yoochun replied, making kissy faces at the older man.
Changmin’s gaze flickered between his hyung-deul, eyes glinting knowingly. “You know with all this flirting that you love to do, it really makes me wonder how you just don’t come clean to each other and get into a serious relationship.”
Jaejoong inserted a finger into his mouth and fake gagged. Yoochun reached a hand and smacked him in the head.
“Hey!” Jaejoong exclaimed, sounding and looking miffed. “Smacking heads upside down is my M.O, not yours.”
“You deserve it.”“ Yoochun said with a scowl. “And I happen to be a great catch.” he scoffed haughtily. “I’m one hot ass.”
“I don’t want your ass.” Jaejoong remarked, shuddering. “And there’s only one person’s ass I’m interested right now. But thanks to you he’s nowhere in sight.” he paused, sniffing. “Oh, I hope he isn't starving somewhere.”
Yoochun winced. “I told you I’d help you look for him tomorrow after we’re done visiting Su’s grave, didn't I?”
There was a moment of silence at the mention of the familiar name as painful memories threatened to resurface again. But both young men, though strained, worked through the tense atmosphere.
“Yeah, I remember you saying that. Thanks.” Jaejoong said, reaching out a hand to cover at his best friend’s own, giving it a gentle squeeze before turning to the maknae. “Ahh right, I nearly forgot. Min what happened to the DVDs I asked?”
Changmin paused mid chew and cocked his head back. “I placed them at the table in the living room.”
“You rented porn again?” Yoochun asked with a raised eyebrow. “Watching’s not as good as the real thing Jae.”
“I know that.” Jaejoong replied huffing. “And it’s not just porn Chun. It’s romantic porn. It actually has a plot.”
Yoochun tutted, his tone patronizing. “Porn does not have plot.”
“Most doesn’t.” Changmin interjected as he swallowed. “But some does. Particularly the ones I made myself, since I don’t believe in senseless sex and all that. That’s what Jaejoong-hyung rented, the movies I produced.”
Yoochun grimaced when Changmin suddenly looked at him straight in the eye. “Ugh!” he groaned. “Not this again.”
“I just don’t understand why you won’t. I mean, I understand Jaejoong-hyung not wanting to. But come on Yoochun-hyung, you’re like the biggest slut there is. Why not take part in a little bit of harmless acting and get payment for it?”
“I told you no. I’m good with fucking customers because at the end of the day, it’s all that there is - sex. But I don’t want to be in front of the camera having to act as if I love a complete stranger while we’re fucking. It makes my skin crawl.”
“Would you… consider accepting it if… Jaejoong-hyung was going to be your partner?”
“No!” Both young men exclaimed at the same time, looked at each other, then shuddered. No, just no.
Like what Jaejoong said the other night, it was like incest. And the thought was just so wrong to them.
“Okay.” Changmin muttered, dropping the subject altogether before plucking out something out of a carton in front of Jaejoong, courtesy of the Chinese take-out that Yoochun bought. “Ooooh, hyung, you have a fortune cookie.”
“Ah lemme see.” Taking it out of Changmin’s hand, Jaejoong opened it and began to mentally read the words. Shortly after, a grin spread across his lips. He cleared his throat and loudly read. “Soon... you will be on top.”
“Wha… it doesn’t say that.” Yoochun disagreed, quickly able to decipher the look in his best friend's eyes. He reached out a hand and snatched the fortune cookie away from his best friend.
“Hey!” Jaejoong protested, eyes narrowing. "That's mine!"
“Of the world.” Yoochun read out loud, shaking his head in amusement. “It says ‘soon you’ll be on top of the world.’”
Jaejoong scoffed. “Tch, whatever. I've always been top in my relationships anyway.”
"Physically maybe. But I know you. Emotionally, you'll always be a needy bottom."
Jaejoong glared, hard. “Jerk.”
Yoochun stuck his tongue out and gave him the finger, before replying. "Bitch."
Changmin just laughed.
"Damn, that was awesome. I'm so full!" Changmin giddily exclaimed once he was done eating, patting contentedly at his middle. "Anyway, I'll have to go now to close up shop. Ahhh, thanks so much for supper guys."
Jaejoong would have said something in return but was cut off when the telephone began to ring loudly.
Changmin stood up from his chair.
"Do you want me to walk you to the door?" Yoochun asked, volunteering.
"Meh, I can find my way out." Changmin said and waved at them both. "Bye hyung-deul. I had a great night."
"Bye Min ah." Jaejoong bid farewell at the younger man's retreating back, so did Yoochun.
"I'll lock the gates on the way out." Changmin yelled before sprinting straight towards the front door.
With a grunt and a glare at his best friend, Jaejoong stood up and began to walk towards the living room to answer the call. "I'll get it. You, finish your supper so we can wash the dishes and call it a night."
Yoochun nodded and began digging on his bowl like he was on an eating contest.
A few minutes passed and Yoochun was suddenly on his feet, just in time to wrap his arms around Jaejoong's frame as he came running back from answering the phone, shaking and deathly pale. "Jae, what's wrong?"
"Chun." Jaejoong tears were streaming down his face when he looked up, lower lip trembling violently. "It's Appa."
Yoochun held him tighter in his embrace. "What? What happened to your dad?"
"He's... he's in the hospital and mom said..." A choked sob escaped Jaejoong as he broke down. "Chun, he's dying."
He hadn’t seen his father in years. Mr. Kim wasn’t really his father. Jaejoong was just ‘another bastard’s evil spawn’ that’s what his father had told him the last time they met. The talked hadn’t been pleasant either. Everything was filled with hatred and despair, curses and swear words floated in the air and bouncing harshly across the Kim manor’s walls.
Junsu was everything to his father. His son, the only one he acknowledged as his flesh and blood, while he was a mistake, plain as day. Kim Jaejoong wasn’t wanted. And after all the hell that his father - no - not his - put him through, he had every right to hate Junsu. But no matter how much he wanted to despise his brother, Jaejoong couldn’t.
Even if he wanted to, he couldn’t hate such an innocent soul, and on top of that, he loved him like life itself.
But he messed up. And now Junsu was dead and his father had never forgiven him ever since. If only he could go back to the old days, when Junsu, Yoochun and him were mere children, to the day that the accident happened, he would have tried harder to save his baby brother, a brother who was born with a weak heart and was as fragile as glass.
His father wouldn’t be this miserable. Yoochun wouldn’t be constantly eaten with guilt and remorse. He had been there too, that day when it all happened, the day when such tragedy befell them.
Jaejoong's best friend today used to be Junsu’s best friend in the past.
Back then, they were practically joined at the hip. Yoochun always looked out for his baby brother, he always took care of him and made sure he took his medicine on time. He often took him out on strolls in the manor’s garden as they chatted and laughed happily without a care in the world. Junsu was special to Yoochun, he was the love of his life.
Now, for the first time in a long time, Jaejoong finally heard his mother’s voice again. He had been very happy to hear the soft melodious timber but as the words of urgency fell from her lips, Jaejoong’s heart nearly stopped.
His father was dying and though the hate he had within him was so strong, he still loved him like a son would.
“I think you can calm down now, Jae. The doctors themselves said he’s gonna be fine.”
“We don’t know that.” Jaejoong muttered, pacing frantically outside the hospital room’s door. His mother was inside, crying her heart out. And it tore at Jaejoong’s own heart, seeing the state his father was in, but he held himself.
“Just… just try to relax alright? And take deep breaths.” Yoochun gently coaxed, clamping a firm hand on his shoulder, stopping him from his pacing. "It won't do your mother good if she finds you like this too."
Jaejoong turned and let his head fall on Yoochun’s shoulders, hugging him. “Thank you for always being there.”
“Hey, we’re best friends, it’s only natural for me to be there for you.” Yoochun replied, embracing him fully.
I wasn’t originally your best friend Chun. And I’m sorry if that wasn’t the case anymore.
“Anyway, did the docs say about who found your father? We really need to thank whoever it was that saved him.”
Jaejoong lifted his head and extracted himself from the hold. He brought a hand to his face and wiped at the tears in his eyes. Yoochun helped him as well, brushing his tear stained cheeks, shushing him softly, smiling warmly.
And in that very act alone, Jaejoong wanted to cry again. Yoochun was looking at him like he used to look at Junsu.
Jaejoong thought he'd be able to get used to it by now, but he never did. Yoochun didn’t even appeared like he was aware of what he was doing. Jaejoong had a very strong notion, that the other man was trying his best to repress the bitterness and devastation in his heart. It worried him, of how Yoochun acted calm despite dying inside.
“You’ve always been a huge crybaby.” Yoochun teased and Jaejoong instantaneously punched him in the arm.
“Prick.” he said but he was smiling. “They said that someone just… carried him here and disappeared right after. I’m pretty worried. Judging from what they said, the guy was bleeding and looked terrible but didn’t want to be treated.”
“Well that was indeed weird.”
“I’m thinking maybe it was Yunho.”
“Yunho?” Yoochun asked with a confused frown.
“I didn’t understand it first but when he told me the truth, I realized the reason why he didn’t want to stay in the hospital for long and the fact he insisted to treat himself was because he was aware he wasn’t entirely human.”
“Well, if it was really him. Why did he help your father? That doesn’t make sense you know.”
Jaejoong blinked. “Yeah, I guess so.” he softly agreed, face falling. “You’re right. That couldn’t be him.”
“But what could have happened to your dad? It couldn’t have been a mugging accident, right? His money, credit cards, driver’s license, hell, everything were still with him when he was rushed here after all.” Yoochun cleverly concluded.
“I… things are not making any sense to me.” Jaejoon groaned and clutched at his hair. “My head hurts.”
Yoochun rested a hand to his head gently. “Do you need aspirin? I’ll go get some from the pharmacy downstairs.”
Jaejoong nodded, moaning. “Yeah, make it three. I feel like my head’s going to explode.”
“You’ve been stressing too much over that Yunho and now this. It’s a wonder you’re still standing at all.” he said in stark concern. Leaning down, Yoochun gave him a soft peck on the forehead and smiled. “I’ll be right back.”
“Chun are you okay? You’ve been silent ever since we left the hospital.” Jaejoong asked, worry lines creasing his forehead as they took slow strides within the neighborhood towards their apartment. “Is something wrong?”
Yoochun shrugged, sighed and directed his best friend with a reassuring smile. “I’m fine Jae. I was just thinking…”
“About what?”
“Oh, you know… just random things. Can we not talk about this? I just feel really tired right now.” he said, yawning.
“Alright then.” Jaejoong nodded in consent, noticing the weary look Yoochun was wearing. “I won’t pester you anymore."
"Ah we’re here.” Yoochun said as he skidded towards the front gate.
When they arrived at the steps towards the front door, a sudden sense of dread coiled itself around Jaejoong’s heart when he noticed the substance on the asphalt ground. “Chun, there's… Chun there’s blood in here.”
“There is.” Yoochun said in agreement, noticing as well what seemed to be droplets of blood on the steps that lead all the way towards the front door. Rushing towards the wooden obstacle, fear mixed with wariness filled them when they realized that the doorknob was also blooded and that it was unlocked. But he locked that before they left earlier.
Quietly taking cautious steps, the two went inside the house. “You think we’re getting robbed?”Jaejoong hissed quietly.
“I don’t know.” Yoochun replied. “But it doesn’t look good. Come on, the bloodstains are leading to the bathroom.”
“Bathroom?” If they were indeed people inside the house that was going to be stealing stuff from them, shouldn’t they go up the stairs and into their bedrooms? Plus, the fact that there are bloodstains didn’t fit the robbing agenda. A dawning realization flashed in Jaejoong’s eyes. Wait, bathroom was where they kept all their first aid materials and - “Yunho.”
Yoochun stopped mid-step and turned around. “What?”
“It’s Yunho. I know it’s him.” Jaejoong exclaimed in mixed relief and concern as he took long quick strides towards the bathroom's direction. If it was indeed Yunho, then he was happy that he came back, but the fact that there was a trail of blood stains decorating their floor was a very unsettling thought.
“Oh my god!” Jaejoong cried out as soon as he opened the bathroom door. His eyes landed on Yunho on the floor, out cold in nothing but a pair of worn out jeans, that looked so much like something that Yoochun owned. “Chun! Help me.”
Yunho’s body was littered with bruises and multiple lacerations, and no, no, no, what the hell was wrong with his arm? There were various equipments lying around Yunho’s prone form that made Jaejoong idly thought of the night he watched Yunho as he stitched himself up, unflinching. But now, he's fainted. What happened to his resistance to pain?
“Jae-- what happened to him?” Yoochun asked, crouching beside his best friend. “There’s too much blood.”
Suddenly, Yunho groaned, his neck turning slightly to the side, falling limp, staying unconscious.
“Chun, he looks really hurt.”
“I’ll call the hospital.”
“No.” Jaejoong caught his best friend’s wrist. “We can’t. What if anyone who wants him dead find him there?”
Yoochun shot Jaejoong an imploring stare. “But then what do we do?”
“He’s--” Jaejoong scooted closer, ignoring the repulsive sight and smell of blood as he cupped Yunho’s cheeks in his hand. He couldn’t put it into words, didn’t understand why he cared so much over a complete non-human trained assassin in such a short period of time, but he did. He cared a lot. Maybe he was just that of a good person perhaps?
Jaejoong swallowed thickly, feeling sudden determination flared in his veins.
He leaned in kissed Yunho lightly on his parted mouth. “I’ll take care of him.” he said, gaze softening.
This was absolutely one hundred percent crazy.
But didn’t everyone say that people did crazy things for love?
Wait! Wait, wait, wait, Kim Jaejoong? In love?
Jaejoong’s eyes widened.
Was he?
