This season I'm following quite numerous of anime titles and
Bakumatsu Rock is among them.
Animenewsnetwork reviewers didn't give this series high praise.
I've got mixed feelings about Bakumatsu Rock as I watched the first episode last night. Seiyuu wise, this series is like a heaven for fangirls. Taniyama Kishou landed himself on the main role. Not only contributing his voice for Sakamoto Ryoma, the GRANRODEO vocalist also sings the insert song and ending song. I must say music is the most powerful weapon in this series.
To add up the seiyuu heaven, we get Ono Kensho (Okita Souji), Morikubo Shoutarou (Katsura Kogorou), and Suzuki Tatsuhisa (Takasugi Shinsaku). Also Morikawa Toshiyuki (Hijikata Toshizou), Yasumoto Hiroki (Ii Naosuke), Hatano Wataru (Harada Sanosuke), Fujiwara Keiji (Kondou Isami), Nomura Kenji (Otose), and Saiga Mitsuki (Tokugawa Yoshinobu). My faves mark in bold~
Eyecatching colors applied to the fascinating character design serve as the eyecandy. Bishounen characters are meant to steal the fangirls' heart.
Story?
Okay, I must admit that Bakumatsu Rock has a ridiculously unique story. The Shinsengumi who are supposed to uphold the law by wielding sword are now using microphone as their ultimate weapon to subdue people. Shinsengumi have now become the government's tool to captivate their citizens' heart. This way, claimed to be more peaceful, they can easily control people so they won't revolt against the government.
Our main character Sakamoto Ryoma is a passionate boy who refuses to submit to the government, despite of the fact that he used to apply for Heaven's Song once. He thinks that his music -obviously rock- is the symbol of the passion in his heart. His meeting with an eccentric man Yoshida Shoin turns Ryoma's life upside down. Yoshida gave Ryoma a guitar which later triggers his revolutionary action.
I can't really say I dislike this series but I'm honestly not too into the story too. Okay, the characters are bisshie and the music is cool but the idea of having Shinsengumi members dancing and singing... is just out of my league.
Watching Bakumatsu Rock after finishing Gintama is just like having a brainwash. I got to see the cool but trollsome Hijikata in Gintama while Bakumatsu Rock offers me a cool but singing and dancing version of the vice commander of Shinsengumi. My heart just can't take it. Hijikata from Bakumatsu Rock is definitely prettier in terms of character design. But... the dancing and singing part... cracks me up.
The reasons why I'd keep watching Bakumatsu Rock are the music and the seiyuus. Can't deny that the music is great. Too bad it wasn't GRANRODEO who performs the OP/ED.
