Chapter 1

Gackt was hanging out with his new friends You, Chachamaru and Ju-Ken. He had just transferred to the place so the boys offered him a stroll around town.

Just then the four teenagers passed by the most famous café in the town. Their senses of smell were tingling as the aroma of sweet coffee filled the air instantly.

“I’m going to get a latte,” Chachamaru told his friends. “Anyone want some?”

“I second latte,” You replied.

“Mocha,” Ju-Ken told the older boy.

“…Cappuccino please.” Gackt spoke lastly.

The blonde boy nodded and went into the café to get their drinks. You, Ju-Ken and Gackt were talking about random topics while waiting for him outside the café.

You and Ju-Ken got into a topic Gackt couldn’t seem to understand so the tall boy was looking around the café and only nodded when he was questioned.

He looked around for a while - Until someone stunned him.

There were a few tables outside of the café and the customers were sipping on their drinks, talking to their companions. Gackt saw a pretty angelic girl sitting with four boys discussing on something.

Wow. She’s having a group date with four guys. Impressive, he thought.

Gackt’s eyes were focused on the girl as he continued studying her. She had beautiful features, her eyes were caramel brown, she had shoulder length dark hair, and her face was porcelain-like. The girl was smiling - Her smile was a sin.

“She’s perfect,” Gackt mumbled. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in his life.

“Earth to Gackt, earth to Gackt,” You called for his friend. “Hey buddy - Are you there?”

In seconds then only Gackt blinked his bleu eyes and snapped out of his thoughts. “What?”

“What are you looking at?” You asked.

“Nothing,” Gackt merely replied.

“Gakku I’m sure you’re staring at someone.” Ju-Ken folded his arms. “Tell us what it is.”

Gackt admitted defeat to his two friends. “Fine. That girl there…” He pointed to the attractive girl. “Is she from our school?”

You and Ju-Ken laughed out loudly when they heard what Gackt asked. Gackt just glared at his friends, not getting a hint on why were they laughing.

“Gackt…” Ju-Ken answered while he was still hugging his stomach from laughing too hard. “She’s not a girl… That’s Takarai-”

Ju-Ken was elbowed by You who can’t stop laughing. He gave the boy beside him a wink and told Gackt, “What Ju-chan here meant was that girl there is not a girl, she’s a living angel.”

When You finished he and Ju-Ken didn’t care about people’s gazes around them and continued laughing. The girl Gackt was examining a while ago noticed his friends’ laughs looked towards them. Gackt knew she was watching and gave her a “Sorry I can’t handle them” grin.

Gackt blushed as red as a tomato after that as the girl returned him a small smile that almost made the boy’s heart to pound even faster.

“What’s all the fuss?” Chachamaru’s voice rang out as he came out of the café with a bag with the boys’ drinks contained.

“Gackt’s got a crush,” You laughed.

“Did not.” Gackt denied immediately.

“Gakku’s got a crush!” You and Ju-Ken spoke unison in a sing sang tone.

“Do you mind telling me who you’re in love with?” Chachamaru whispered as he handed him his cappuccino.

“Um…”

“That girl over there!” You pointed towards the girl Gackt awkwardly fell in love with. The girl stood up from her seat and left the café with the four boys.

Chachamaru followed You’s finger and knew how the commotion began. The four friends walked to another opposite direction of Gackt’s crush.

“Gakku I have to tell you something.” Chachamaru looked at him as Gackt took a sip of his cappuccino. “That girl just now is not a girl.”

Gackt spat out his drink with shock but he was glad he didn’t spit the drink on someone or else he would be getting a lecture by some random guy he met on the street.

“What did you say?”

You and Ju-Ken giggled because they knew what Chachamaru meant by that.

“What do you mean she’s not a girl?” Gackt stared at Chachamaru, his bleu eyes were glimmering with curiosity and he must know what was going on.

“Fine,” Chachamaru huffed. “That girl you’ve mistaken for is called Takarai Hyde. She’s a he.”

Gackt’s eyes widened and they’re now the size of dinner plates. “But-”

“I know what you’re going to ask now.” Chachamaru interrupted himself with a swig of his latte. “Everyone was dumbfounded by his face and gender when they first met him. He’s a mystery to me though - How could a guy be look so feminine and… beautiful?”

“Who knows?” Ju-Ken shrugged.

“So that girl just now is called Takarai Hyde and she’s a… guy, like us?” Gackt asked just to confirm that what he heard was wrong.

“Mm-hmm,” Gackt’s friends nodded.

Gackt frowned. “Great. Just great.”

“Gakku it’s alright,” Ju-Ken patted Gackt’s shoulder. “There’s always next time.”

“Do you… Think that he would be…” Gackt looked at the concerned boy who raised an eyebrow. “Uh I don’t know… Gay?”

Chachamaru, You and Ju-Ken gazed at the newbie in town with full concern. “Gakku…”

“I know, I know, I must let go.” Gackt sighed and took another swig of his drink to silence himself. “…But I can’t forget him. His face keeps appearing in my mind!” He slightly raised his voice to not his friends gawk at him as if they saw a mutant wandering in the day light.

“Gakku,” You eventually spoke with concern. “I encourage you to follow your love, but…”

“Its better you don’t try. You’re never ever getting him to like you in a romantic way. You’ll be heart brokened.” Chachamaru continued.

“Why?” Gackt asked furiously.

“He…” The three boys exchanged glances with each other before answering.

“He what?”

“Hyde was forced into sex when he was in junior high,” You spoke softly. “He was 13.”

Gackt froze and his eyes widened in shock. Hyde was forced into sex? He felt as if his whole world began to tumble to pieces when he heard this.

“He was just too attractive and too beautiful.” Ju-Ken continued. “Not only girls were attracted by his beauty as well as boys too. A lot of people intended to get into his pants. Hyde was too young when the incident happened.”

“W-what happened?” Gackt asked as he gathered all of his courage to do so. He was still shocked by what he was told. He didn’t know that something terrible like rape occurred to Hyde.

“He was alone in the classroom after school and a senior came in and did it.” Chachamaru responded to him. “He had a bad time but he was lucky he overcame it. Some people couldn’t forget something like that which happened to them so easily.”

“Being perfect isn’t the best thing you can have.” You declared which Chachamaru and Ju-Ken nodded with agreement. “I wouldn’t want it if I were you.”

“Take the advice, Gackt,” Ju-Ken told the boy. “It’s the best for you.”

The school bell rang and the students down the hallways hurriedly went to their classes respectively, not leaving a shadow as they know they would be in trouble if they were caught not punctual in class.

When Gackt walked to his seat the teacher showed him at the day he was first transferred, shocked to see the empty seat beside him was occupied with a person.

Takarai Hyde.

“H-Hello,” Gackt greeted the beautiful boy nervously. Why is he sitting beside me? “Nice to meet you.”

“Nice to meet you too, err…” Hyde paused and frowned. “I was absent so I don’t know what is your name…”

“Camui,” Gackt stated as he settled down his bag. “Camui Gackt.”

“Okay, Gackt-san,” Hyde gave him a small smile. “I’m Takarai Hyde. Just call me Hyde.”

Oh my God! Gackt cried in his heart. He’s smiling to me!

Gackt didn’t pay any attention during class. His mind was full of thoughts of Hyde, and his heart kept pounding through out the classes, making him to stand up awkwardly when the teacher asked him about something.

Gackt took his food to a table where Chachamaru, You and Ju-Ken were sitting. He sat down beside Ju-Ken and snapped, “Why didn’t you tell me that the seat beside me was occupied?”

“Huh?”

“You didn’t tell me that empty seat belonged to Hyde! Why were you thinking?” The love struck boy exclaimed and had a big chew on his sandwich.

“Oh, that,” You smirked. “We forgot and we didn’t know you’ll be in love with him.”

“You told me that everyone who first met him will fall for him.” Gackt pouted. “Luckily I didn’t embarrass myself in front of him.”

“Don’t try to get him, Gakku,” Chachamaru drank his chocolate flavoured milk and wrapped his hands around You tightly. “I told you you’ll be heart brokened.”

“I know,” Gackt sighed and stared at his half eaten sandwich for a while. He then looked back to Chachamaru and You who were stealing each other’s food. “Hey - Are the both of you together or something?”

Ju-Ken spat out his water while You dropped the piece of watermelon he was going to steal from Chachamaru. The blonde boy choked on his macaroni and his face turned blue. Ju-Ken helped him recover by giving him a slap on his back. Chachamaru finally got enough air to breathe and panted.

“You didn’t answer my question,” Gackt folded his arms.

“Um… How to say this…” Chachamaru started to blush.

“We are together.” You replied with a confident tone. Ju-Ken smirked.

“I knew it,” Gackt smiled too. “Are you two going well?”

Ju-Ken interfered our talking and spoke, “They’re way beyond well! They had-” He silenced himself because before he could finish his sentence, he received two death glares from the two lovers.

“Congrats,” Gackt finished his last bite of his sandwich, understanding what Ju-Ken meant.

“Y-you shouldn’t have.” Chachamaru and You spoke in unison, both blushing heavily. Ju-Ken and Gackt just laughed their asses off.

Ju-Ken told Gackt that almost everyday Hyde would wait for his buddies in the art room. Since that incident, his couldn’t be alone while he was away from his home so his childhood friends Tetsuya, Kaz, Yukihiro and Ken were asked to accompany him whenever he was at school or strolling around town.

As Gackt was walking nearer the art room, he was thinking of which pick-up line he had to use to let Hyde gain some faith from him, and maybe that would be able to let the beautiful boy’s friendship with him get closer.

School was over and Gackt overheard Hyde’s conversation with a friend of his, Yukihiro from the class next to us talking about going home together. Yukihiro was having practice at the school field that evening so Hyde decided to wait for him.

Gackt was smiling to himself as he thought of Hyde’s face he would see afterwards. He reached the art room and the door was closed. He knew Hyde would freak out if he appeared suddenly so he pulled the door and peeked through it a little.

Bleu eyes widened because what he saw wasn’t the scene he wanted to see. Sketches were scattered in the room. Hyde was pinned against a wall with a boy a head taller than him standing behind him, whom Gackt guessed he was a senior, maybe in his last year of high school. Hyde was topless as the senior kissing him randomly cupped his mouth with his hand and his other hand snaked into the smaller boy’s pants. Hyde let out a small whimper when the older boy squeezed his member, making Gackt clench his fists.

Gackt stormed in, making the two boys in the room to gasp. Hyde got his advantage and tried to release himself from the older boy’s grasp but failed as his small frame had no strength due to his struggle before Gackt came into the room.

Hyde was pulled away from the senior by Gackt furiously, rushing to the tables where his clothes lay. Gackt hit the senior in the face, gave him a few extra punches and by the time he noticed his opponent the boy was already bleeding. The senior scampered away as he buttoned up his shirt and trousers.

Gackt then turned around to face Hyde who had just finished buckling his belt. The small boy was still crying, tears slid down from his porcelain face. He moved backwards when Gackt came closer to him as he was afraid what would he do to him.

“Don’t worry,” Gackt spoke softly to not frighten Hyde. “It’s okay; I’m not going to hurt you.”

Hyde didn’t say anything and moved a step away from Gackt. He wanted to go home so badly, but he was still frightened from what happened just now.

Just as Hyde was leaving for the door, Gackt grabbed his wrist, making Hyde’s whole body to tremble with fear.

“Let go…” He begged, trying to escape from the taller boy’s grasp.

“I’m not going to do anything to you. I just want to talk to you.” Gackt slowly released his grasp and stood up, walking to the doors and windows yanking them wide open. Hyde stopped his pace and merely stared at him, wondering what he was going to do. “Look, the doors and windows are all open, so if you feel like not talking during our conversation afterwards you can run.”

Hyde was stunned. No one ever treated him like this except for his close friends and family. The tall boy standing in front of him was the first person in his life to care for him. Others would just take off their clothes and pin him on a table or against the wall. Hyde slowly nodded his head because Gackt’s bleu eyes told him that he was honest of what he said.

The tall boy smiled widely and led Hyde to a table, sitting down on a chair himself. “So… Are you still freaked out?”

“A little,” Hyde stared at Gackt. “It always happens.”

“Always?”

“A few times in a month,” Hyde answered softly, wiping off the tear stains which remained on his face.

Gackt was astonished. He had never thought that Hyde would undergo these things in a month as that was too much to him himself.

“Only attempted rape,” Hyde added.

Gackt was quiet for a few seconds as he looked at the almost broken boy sitting in front of him. “…Then… Can you tell me about what happened in junior high?”

Hyde froze when he heard Gackt’s question but slightly nodded. He knew he couldn’t hide from the past and he had to face it. “The senior…” He breathed. “I’d already know that he had a crush on me for a long time. I didn’t care much, but I left my guard down and he got me. It happened too fast, I couldn’t remember much what happened except the pain. But after that he was dealt with so I wouldn’t worry about him so much.”

“How many times have you gone through something like that?” Gackt leaned back to his chair, scratching his chin. He hoped he wouldn’t get the answer he thought about, but it wasn’t what he hoped for.

“…Three times excluding the first.” Hyde looked away from him and stared at the wall with hanged paintings. “Since then if something like that happened again my friends would be blamed for not taking good care of me so I must be very careful when I interact with others. I don’t want them to be scolded because of me.”

“Three?” Gackt blinked his eyes. He slammed the table with anger and stood up. What the hell did I hear? I thought it was just once! A minute later he realized that caramel eyes were gawking at him. “Sorry… I-I didn’t mean to startle you…”

“It’s okay, you don’t have to worry.” Hyde gave him a small smile. “I’m used to it.”

“Oh…” Gackt calmed down a bit and sat down. “…I bet it was painful.” He whispered softly.

Hyde heard what he said. “It was. It hurt more than you could ever imagine. But I’d rather not talk about it.”

The room was filled with silence. None of them spoke. Gackt didn’t know how to react as he didn’t want to hurt any of the beautiful boy’s feelings.

“Sorry I brought this up.” Was the words he could mumble out of his mouth.

“Never mind. I’m not angry.” Hyde got up from his seat and squatted down to collect his drawings and stationery lying on the ground to be put into his bag pack. The small boy stood up, holding his bag and pointed to the exit of the room. “I… have to go find Yukkie. See you later.”

Gackt nodded and paused. “Can… Can we be friends?”

Hyde glanced at the brunette as he stopped by the door. He wasn’t sure at first, but he somehow made up his mind and smirked. “We’ll see… Gackt.”

Gackt watched as Hyde slowly disappeared in the corridors of the school. He was happy that he had a nice little conversation with the boy he admired, but he was too angry and grew pity onto Hyde when he heard about Hyde’s past. The school ground was a pit of danger to the small boy and his friends couldn’t be always with him for the whole time, and that’s when Gackt decided that he would protect Hyde to let Hyde have a nice, happy school life.
