Sam and Gene did not speak about the shag. Sam let it bottle itself up inside, and made sure he didn't get too drunk around Gene Hunt just in case those awful feelings came back

"Funnily enough, Sam. Same place I got you. Transfer. Only this ray of sunshine's from Blackpool, not 'yde." Gene lit up a cigarette. When did he become a babysitter? He was far too sober to deal with this.
"Petey, go tell the lads to finish up their reports and leave 'em on my desk, then they can get off fer the night." He rubbed at his eyes. "Tyler, op in the front, you're coming with me to get food."
He doesn't trust you, Gene, but he wants his damned spot back! So yes, there we go, the moment Peter pouted and got out of the car, Sam immediately took his spot.
And put on his seat belt.
And got 800 wrappers stick to his shoe. "The 'ell?!"
"Bloody 'ell. I'm going to kill 'im. Messing up my motor!" Gene shot Sam a sideways glance. Seatbelt? Really? Worse than a girl.
He started the car and took off 'round the corner, right by the take away place they were supposed to be going to and kept on driving, and driving, and driving until they reached a quay.
Gene was going to off him. Sam wasn't exactly afraid, but he did look at the Lion questioningly, head tilted back on the seat. He left off the snide comment that his new pet hedgehog would be sadly disappointed without a sandwich.
Peter would survive a few minutes without food. Well... he'd moan when they got back, but he wouldn't starve to death. Besides, there were plenty of lollipops in his desk drawer.
Gene cut off the engine and leaned back in his seat. He sat, silently, for a good five minutes, just staring ahead.
Sam's stomach tightened up in about three hundred knots, each one tighter than the last. He kept his eyes forward too, but the words sunk in and he had to turned his shocked gaze towards the Lion. The man was acting weird. Tears earlier and now this...
How could someone so stubbornly strong become so broken?
Sam hesitated for a few long moments of silence and put his hand over Gene's as it rested on the stick. Same damned gloves he'd sucked on both nights they spent together.
"Yeah, you too." Because neither could say that they missed the other.
Gene didn't bat Sam's hand away. It was a welcomed weight. Oh, Sam. If only you knew how broken your lion was. He had come so close to giving up. So close to admitting defeat. Jim had broken him far worse than anything else ever had. Losing Sam, Mac's betrayal, Chris' betrayal, almost killing Alex. All of it had chipped away at him, weakening him, then in rolled Keats and knocked down his kingdom like a house of cards.
It took awhile for Gene to speak again. Finding the right words was hard. Letting out feelings was hard. "So... you know the truth, aye?"
"I was slow," Sam said, pulling Gene's hand into his lap. The gloves made his fingers look thicker than they were. Sam knew that Gene had large, but surprisingly delicate hands. He undid the glove and gently worked it off. It was a little like undressing Gene. That was something he had never properly done. "I ought to have figured it out sooner. I could taste it."
Gene felt strangely vulnerable and exposed with his glove removed and his hand in Sam's lap. Or maybe it was the fact Sam knew the truth, and with that knowledge he could destroy Gene's kingdom just as easily as Keats good. Either way, he felt vulnerable and it was hard to breath.
Sam sighed and wrapped his fingers tightly around Gene's hand without lacing them together. His eyes fell back to the water where it was so much less heartbreaking to look. "Kissin' you. Ought to 'ave given it away. Did, a bit. Can't really explain it better than that. Jus'-- I knew I was dead. Known for years. Figured you 'ad to be too, but... Nah, you're somethin' entirely different. Whole new level, you are."
Were... they holding hands? Yes, yes they were. And it felt kind of... right. "Well, nobody else has ever told me I taste dead before... Well, apart from in a morning after a heavy night on the booze and the fags, but we all taste dead then." He was trying to lighten the mood. It wasn't working.
He sighed. "Do you see me different now that you know?"
It was a very manly hand holding, Gene. Sam would have it no other way. But yeah, it did feel right. Better than.
Sam let his head fall back on the headrest and frowned. He could be Alex right now. Maybe even Liz. Would Gene care?
"Not like death. Like... Sunshine. Shut it. Don't comment on that." Sam swallowed, not smiling. "I do see you different, Guv. Because you are different. You're-- I didn't know it'd do this to you. Don't mean to be apart of it."
