Title: A Still More Glorious Dawn Awaits
Rating: PG only because of sadness.
Fandom: Star Trek (XI)
Characters: Gaila
Summary: Gaila's last moments.
Gaila is among the first to realise something is wrong.
As the hum of warp disappears the silence is replaced not with engineering's customary arrival message, courtesy of the intership communications network, but is instead blasted away as shipwide alarms begin sounding their klaxon wails. Lights flash and the intercom beeps to life. "PROXIMITY ALERT, INCOMING MISSILE. ALL DECKS PREPARE FOR IM--" the Farragut shudders massively, and the intercom cuts off for one second-- two-- three-- and then stutters back to life with, "--TTLE STATIONS. REPEAT, ALL PERSONNEL TO BATTLE STATIONS."
Everyone, Gaila included, scatters to their various assigments. Gaila catches the tail end of desperation in the officer's voice. She knows. There is no saving the Farragut.
There is no saving her crew.
Some of the other crew members know it as well. She can see it in their faces, the set of their lips, the sad, hard glint in their eyes. Nontheless, the movements of the Farragut's crew are executed without hesitation. Whatever the outcome, whatever happens to them, they have their duty.
A wave of senseless, strong love for the crew sweeps through Gaila. She knows none of them beyond faces, names of the ones who shared classtime with her. Nevertheless, as the alarms grow louder, she wishes she had time to tell them how she loves them. Wishes she could tell her friends at the Academy--
"PROXIMITY ALERT."
--tell Uhura--
"INCOMING MISSILE."
--tell Jim--
"ALL DECKS PREPARE FOR--"
--she loves--
"--IMPACT."
