http://www.salon.com/entertainment/tv/feature/2011/04/16/game_of_thrones_review_of_reviewers/ This person rocks.
Seriously, how dare ANYONE knock down the gamer girls who have come so far in the past twenty years-nay five years!-into the forefront of the world. Were we not just celebrating, ladies, the joy of not having to lock ourselves in a closet full of miniatures and the old D&D cartoon shows? Were we not just appreciating the step forward the world has taken since LotR, everyone finally accepting that women, too, adore science fiction and fantasy?
Reading the two articles below was just angering and insulting. I present them here for posterity's sake.
I agree that sex sells. It's not something I'm appreciative of, to say the least, but it is something I'm willing to accept. I'm also willing to accept that sex is a part of everyone's life, and that, as presented properly in aGoT, it has serious repercussions if not treated with respect and dignity. Seriously, people, grow up. Sex is, sex was, sex always has been and always will be. There is no procreating without it.
I could also rant on and on about how one of the authors below tries to explain how Westeros is in a past of our world such as the Hobbit is. (That's a confusing sentence. Let me try again.) The Hobbit is placed in a world called "Middle Earth" and is clearly seen as a time period lost somewhere between the dawn of time and the rise of man. Just because The Hobbit is written as such, does not mean A Song of Ice and Fire is. Westeros is a fictional world--it has nothing to do with ours--so nowhere in it is George R.R. Martin making statements on global warming or the political state of the nation. He has a blog to do that. He doesn't need to clog up his deliciously beautiful books with such things.
The second review was simply insulting. A guy who hates fantasy, Renaissance Festivals, and professes it loudly? Why then, sir, are YOU the one reviewing this show? There's certainly no bias in what you have to say! How can we trust your opinion at all? Oh, that's right, we can't. So shut up until you have an educated idea of what you're talking about. "Fell asleep trying to read Chaucer." *makes the ugliest face she can* No wonder you're a hack. You never could figure out what good writing was all about! (Chaucer wasn't fantasy you moron! Learn the difference!)
Anyway, done ranting. Off to play my Game of Thrones games in the hopes of winning $10,000 and off to buy food for the Passover celebration of Spring and Geekdom.
C'mon, Gamer Girls! Rise up against this insanity! There's no longer need to hide away! We are who we are! And we are STRONG!!
http://tv.nytimes.com/2011/04/15/arts/television/game-of-thrones-begins-sunday-on-hbo-review.html http://www.slate.com/id/2291119/ Read them and make your own opinion. (And then read the books and watch the show and be truly educated about it all!)
