Last night was one of the most amazing nights of my life. I can't really explain to you why it was so meaningful to me, but it was.
I've been reading every Holocaust book the library here has, thereby drinking in knowledge and making myself quite happy and passionate. A discussion of my most recent book (Mietek Pemper's "The Road to Rescue: The Untold Story of Schindler's List") led to my dearest Lion asking to watch the movie "Schindler's List" with me. Only one person has ever asked to participate in my passion before, and that was Mike. There was such love sent to Lion for wanting to share in my passion, even though he didn't understand it all.
So, we sat down to watch the movie when he got home from work, after dinner. And I gave him the remote control, as we have power struggles over it, but I felt he deserved it for doing this with me.
And he did the most amazing thing: he paused the movie frequently to ask questions. He had me digging out maps of Auschwitz-Birkenau and timelines of WWII. He had me pull out my books on the politics of the Third Reich and asked me the best questions! The movie lasted a whole two hours longer than it normally did, but it happened because HE CARED ENOUGH TO ASK!! He wanted to understand me so much that he asked questions and let me teach! He even found a part of all of it that he might be interested in, so we could then share the passion.
Oh, I'm so in love!!
I also jumped for joy when I realized that Mietek Pemper was actually a character in the movie, and Lion mocked me for a while about having a new hero in my life. :-)
The sad part of the entire evening was when my movie started to skip--badly. Broken pictures, frozen disc, distorted soundtrack. And all during the liquidation of the Krakow ghetto (you know: the scene with the little girl in the red coat?). It made me want to cry. :-(
I now need a new copy of Schindler's List. Can you say "birthday?"
