hey soul sister, ain't that mister mister on the radio

I am addicted to the new Train song even if the video terrifies me because the lead singer just looks like an alt!verse version of John Stamos.

So I initially had planned to start doing the 30-day tv meme starting July 1st. Clearly, you see how well that worked out. But then I discovered an entire new meme! So I've decided to do both of them (and they're both 30-day memes) and hope I can stick to it a day at a time.

The 30 day TV and ship meme, everyone, because Karen cannot have one without the other. And because I love picspamming and love to practice out my skills, there's mini-picspams below the cut.

day 01 - What is your current favorite ship?

Eleven/Amy

I fell in love with these kids from day 1. The Internet never forgets and my reaction e-mail when I was watching The Eleventh Hour was about how I was going to be determined not to ship them and then, bb!Amy was just Amy and Eleven was just Eleven and I was all oh shit going back on that promise right now. I love a lot of things about them but what draws me to them again and again is their chemistry. They have SO MUCH OF IT. There are these moments where Eleven looks at Amy like she's the one thing he adores and she's just so flirty with him and I love it, will love it forever, thank you. I love that he broadens her world and I love that she sort of grounds him when he's being crazy or douchey or guilt-trippy Doctor (see 1x02 and 1x03). I love that they act like kids around each other, but when one of them is hurting, they can just sort of be there. They've shaped each other - we know that Amy wouldn't be Amy if she had never met the Doctor and in a way, I don't think Eleven would be the same if he hadn't met Amy.

day 01 - A show that should never have been cancelled

Ten Things I Hate About You

Okay. This might turn into an essay. But LJ essays full of flail and happiness as opposed to rage is a good change, isn't it? Basically, this is me trying to tell you why you should be watching this show if you haven't already seen it. Because I love this show so much and cancellation will not change that.

Basically, this show minus the music is the show Glee wishes it could have been.

It's hilarious. It's got a, what, an ensemble cast? It's got awesome female characters, awesome POC characters, awesome guys, awesome relationships. I love what Carter Covington has done with this show, basically. He's broadened it. It's not just about Kat and Patrick and how they manage to find their way to each other. It's about all the smaller relationships, like Kat and Bianca trying to figure out for themselves what being sisters in high school means and how strong that love is, about how the dad figures out how to deal with life after the death of his spouse, about Kat and Patrick trying to figure out what their relationship is and how they should go about it. I love a lot about this show.

At the beginning, a few secondary characters irritated me, but by the end, I have come to love them. (If you're wondering, those characters would be Bianca and Cameron.)

The characters are what make this show. Kat is a feminist, is loud about being a feminist, and is so determined to just march through life so strong that sometimes she just is so vulnerable. Chastity is the black cheerleading captain and she's everything a mean girl should be: perky, rich, cheerful with some crazy snappy comebacks.

From 1x09:
Kat: Oh, I know what you're up to. I've seen those crappy teen movies.
Chastity: Oh, me too. But aren't you supposed to show up much later ... wearing a hockey mask?
Kat: And you'll be the first to go.

Bianca is so determined to be popular but be nice while doing so. Dawn is her super-cheerful, super-perky but somehow non-annoying best friend. Cameron is the quiet dude who crushes on Bianca until she tells him that she doesn't want to date him and you know what? He takes the hint and he says, "You need to give me some time to get over you," and it does not become this like super epic angsty pining thing. Plus, then he starts dating Dawn and they're SUPER ADORABLE.

This show proves that you can write a hilarious, socially-aware show. Things are not mutually exclusive, okay? There are two gay characters on the show: Michael (played by David Krumholtz in the original) and Mandela, and both of those storylines have this theme of JUST BECAUSE YOU'RE STRAIGHT AND WE'RE FRIENDS DOES NOT MEAN I WANT TO GET IN YOUR PANTS. And it is just a thing! Michael is BFFs with Cameron so it takes him a long time to work up the nerve to tell him and then they make a joke out of how everyone crushes on Joey Donner! And they talk about modeling and eating disorders. And Kat making Patrick take an STD test before they have sex. Kat making Patrick talk about sex before they have sex.

And instead of the "will they or won't they," Carter Covington basically did a brilliant thing. He decided to explore how RELATIONSHIPS ARE HARD. The biggest thing preventing Kat/Patrick from happening is Kat and Patrick themselves, their mutual baggage issues, their sometimes inability to communicate, and their vulnerabilities. And the whole will-they-or-won't-they thing is about whether or not they can navigate that together instead of getting together to break up and getting together to break up, etc.

ALSO THE UST. THEY ARE SO GOOD AT IT. LITERALLY SO GOOD.

But my favorite relationship on this show has to be between Kat and Bianca. They're at each other's throats all the time because they're both teenagers and they're sisters but when it comes down to it, when there's hard moments, I love when they just like chill out together and hug because YAY SISTER RELATIONSHIPS.

I end this love!post with two things:

1. THIS SHOW, PLEASE GO WATCH IT. EACH EPISODE IS ONLY REALLY ABOUT 21 MINUTES AND THERE ARE ONLY LIKE 20 EPISODES. IT'S ONLY ONE SEASON. PLEASE JUMP ONTO THIS TRAIN.

and

2. One of my favorite quotes:

Kat: You know, Dad warns us everyday about getting pregnant.
Bianca: You're lucky. He warns me twice a day.
Kat: Yeah, well, he never mentions all the other ways a guy can screw you.
Bianca: Amen, sister.

tv: 10 things i hate about you, graphics: picspam, tv: doctor who, 30 day meme, meme
