But he couldn't shake the thought that he could have done so much ... more.
The kiss pressed to his cheek startled him out of his thoughts as he turned to see his lover next to him, looking at him with a frown.
"Nobody should look that troubled on their birthday." He said.
Spencer didn't bother trying to plaster on a smile, Aaron knew him better than that. Instead he shrugged and looked down, "I'm just, a little stuck inside my head."
Aaron sighed, "And you wanted to ignore your birthday and I had to go ruin that."
"No," He said immediately, "That was amazing and it actually helped. I'm just.." He groaned and rubbed his eyes, "I don't even know. It's not you. Actually you and Jack are the only thing keeping me from spiralling into an introspective coma."
Aaron said nothing, he just leaned in and kissed him. It was comforting, safe and perfect. All this was perfect.
Breaking the kiss and looking deeply into his eyes, Aaron said, "Come on, Jack and I have something for you."
"You didn't have to get me anything." Spencer said as he was dragged playfully down stairs. When they arrived in the living room, he saw Jack stood, holding something behind his back, with a huge smile on his face.
"Well, actually," Aaron said as he moved to stand next to his son, "We kind of cheated. This isn't so much something we're giving you, as it is something you earned. Something Jack picked out all by himself." Aaron gave him a pointed look when he said that, as though that was an important factor.
Jack looked excitedly towards his father for confirmation before running up and handing Spencer a medium sized box. Smiling down at the boy, Spencer took it and pulled open the lid.
A cup. He smiled as he thought about all the times Jack had asked him for some of his coffee,
He pulled it out and saw that it was a purple cup. He thought back to when Jack had asked him why he had so many purple ties, scarves and shirts. And how the boy had smiled when Spencer had told him it was his favorite colour, saying his own was green.
He turned it and saw the writing printed on it.
He cried.
