Reid vs virginity bowie28 April 25 2012, 20:04:35 UTC
I never believed that Reid was a virgin when the show started (he was 24 in S1) but then I saw this scene in "Naturally Born Killer" where Garcia makes a plumber/coeds porno joke and Reid doesn't get it. It makes me rethink my viewpoint a bit. I know the scene doesn't necessarily mean Reid's a virgin, but it does make one wonder how exposed he was to the subject of sex. I imagine he read a lot and being a scientist he would experiment things with himself. But knowing his childhood, Reid has major trust issues, so I can't imagine him hooking up with random people either. That said, sometimes I feel like he's the kind of person whose intellect allows him to compartmentalize and have fuck buddy(ies) because that way trust doesn't come into play much. Then again sometimes I think he's just not that into it. I mean from the way he kissed Lila in "Somebody's Watching," I won't say he's asexual, but more like sex isn't something he's losing sleep over.

I hope it's okay that I focus on Reid, and not both halves of the couple. I'd love to hear what you guys think.

I think Reid is asexual in the sense that sex doesn't really interest him. My personal fanon is that he's actually kind of grateful that he's never had these powerful urges, because, really? Profiling is kind of the art of applying sexual urges to murders (at least when the unaub is male, as we are so often told).

However asexuality doesn't mean no sex, ever. It's perfectly possible for someone who identifies as asexual to have sexual feelings towards just one person in their entire lives, and that's kind of how I see Hotch/Reid when I see Reid as being asexual. :-)

I would love it if the writers explore this side of Reid a bit more. They don't need to give him a girlfriend (or a boyfriend, please). Just treat Reid like an adult with human needs and don't have Morgan tease him every five minutes.

I actually like the way they've kept it understated. It keeps so many possibilities open. :-)

That is also true. Knowing the writers now, that's probably for the best.

I'm sorry I can't answer you properly now (rl got in the way lol, I will tonight or tomorrow) but I understand your point :)

Also, don't worry, it's not like you can go OT in a OT post xD (well you can if you start talking about unicorns...), I mean as far as it's related with our beloved OTP is fine for me.
Cheers!

We all know Reid graduated high school at twelve so he only entered puberty when he was in college. I doubt any of his peers would have been interested in engaging a sexual relationship with him then, first of all he was very young, so on the verge of it being illegal and secondly I don't think Reid was too popular at university either.
I get the feeling that the people in the BAU were Reid's first real friends and the way he acted around Lila (and MGG saying that Lila was Reid's first kiss) I just don't believe he was in a serious romantic relationship before. Also the trust issues he would obviously have play into that.
I just can't imagine Reid going out and having one night stands with random strangers.
I agree with dhae_knight that Reid might not be all that interested in sex. I think he fantasizes and masturbates but his urge isn't that strong that he would actually go out to "get laid".
I figure he figues it's gonna happen eventually with the right person and I want to believe Hotch is that person for him.
I also have to admit I am biased because my biology teacher was so much like Reid and he told us he didn't have sex until he met the woman he knew he wanted to marry and he was thirty when that happened.

Oh, I didn't know that MGG said that the kiss with Lila was Reid's first kiss. Just that it was MGG's first on-screen kiss. If that's true, it will clear up a lot of things for me.

I can get down with the idea of Reid not being overtly interested in sex. I don't see him as a guy who goes out just to get laid either. But I don't think he will refuse sex either if it's being offered by someone he's attracted to.

We all love to think that Hotch is that right person. That's the whole reason we're here, right? :)

If there's a "naked coed and plumber" joke, I don't know it either. That's more what I got out of the scene, how do those two things connect?

At least when I write Reid, I take it that sex is just another bodily function -- you're hungry so you eat. You're tired, so you sleep. You're horny, you do something about it. But I like experienced Reid, so YMMV.

I think that joke shows that Reid's not familiar with pornography since "naked coed and a plumber" is one of the most cliched themes out there? I think the writers just wanted to show that Reid is that worldly in that aspect, but doesn't mean he never had sex. For all we know he doesn't even watch porn, or need it to get off.

I just rewatched a lot of Criminal Minds and I noticed that Reid not only refuses to shake hands with people he doesn't know but he also hates it to be touched by strangers. He sends police officers glares when they pat his shoulder, etc. and he goes out of his way to not be physically close to someone so I don't think he would engage in sex with strangers.
