My 10 Favorite Movies of All Time
(1) The Royal Tenenbaums
Some say this movie was the birth of hipster-dom, but screw it, because I've loved it from the moment I saw it in high school. The melancholy hope entangled in the film, combined with the Wes Anderson charm (before it became so Wes Andersonian), and the fact that I felt like I was seeing something like I had never seen before made me feel more connected to a film than I ever had before. I still re-watch it a couple times a year.
(2) Breakfast At Tiffany's
My love for Audrey Hepburn started in 7th grade, when I accidentally cut my bangs too short, and my English teacher told me I looked like the waifish star. Holly Golightly's moxie spoke to me, and I'll admit to being charmed by the love story. I have since read the novella, and I do think the original ending works better for the character, but as a sentimental teenager I only loved the film.
(3) Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2
I couldn't decide between the two, but I love the tale of the scorned, vengeful Bride, who is the badass I always hoped I could be.
(4) The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Bill Murray is perfect in his role as the sea captain in denial. The final scene never fails to bring a tear to my eye.
(5) The Jerk
Steve Martin is so goofy in this movie, and it's just a completely pointless-but-hilarious film. "He hates these cans!"
(6) Lost in Translation
Yet another one with Bill Murray. I do love him, most especially in his dramatic roles. I know a lot of people find this film boring, but I love its honesty and juxtaposition of Japanese and American culture.
(7) Rushmore
And yet another Wes Anderson flick. But who can resist Jason Schwartzman as Max Fischer?
(8) Planet Earth
Does a documentary series count as a movie? Close enough. I've always loved nature documentaries, and my dad and I used to watch Nature on PBS together every week. The production value and new information provided by these docs made a nature nerd like me so very happy.
I'm running out of movies, so I think I'll leave this list short at 8! Guess it's time to find more films to love.
Five Places I Have Lived
(1) I grew up in a rather wealthy suburb of Cincinnati. My family was not wealthy, especially compared to some of our neighbors, but we had a nice little ranch house on a wooded double lot. There was a park within walking distance, and a creek in our back woods. I spent a lot of time in those woods, pretending to be various animals or riding various imaginary horses.
(2) I went to college in Athens, Ohio, which is a small, college town in Appalachia. It was a great place to go to school, with a very safe, friendly campus, and my journalism program is one of the top ranked in the country. Those three and a half years have been some of the happiest in my life to date.
(3) My first apartment post-college was in a borderline sketchy neighborhood north of downtown Cincinnati. Still, the place had beautiful wood floors, and the most amazing, arched window in the kitchen. My roommate spent a lot of time at her parents' house, so I mostly had the place to myself.
(4) Noah and I lived in a tiny, one-bedroom place in a generic apartment complex shortly before and after we got married. It was an inexpensive place that allowed us to have two dogs, but it wasn't the best place I've ever seen.
(5) Our new house! Which I am still completely in love with. We are all very happy here in our new home.
