Just to make things clear, this isn't meant to be taken as the bible truth to editing/cleaning 8D
These are some of the steps I take at the time of this writing plus some nuances I'd want to have in the files you'd be sending me. Also, I'm assuming we're all using Photoshop, m'kay?
REMOVING COLOR
Image→Mode→Grayscale
♫ Because it just looks better. I make sure I do this now, I used to not.
CROPPING & ROTATING
Scans are donated to us, so we can't really complain I reckon
♫ Because it just looks better
LEVELS
Move the black and white triangles.
You don't need to touch the gray one in the middle~
CTRL + L
♫ To make it easier, it's best to be able to see the whole picture (CTRL + 0). Another thing that might help is to just make the black err blacker, and the white is err whiter, if that made any sense 8D Because, overdoing it might make our eyes bleed.
♫ One good trick might be hitting CTRL + ALT + L. This copies the levels you set for the previous image you edited. It makes 'em somewhat more consistent, and it makes work easier and faster~
REMOVING GUTTER SHADOWS
Gutter shadows can actually be minimized by making sure the doujin/manga is flat against the scanner, DURING the scanning process. In our case, we can't really complain 8D
♫ Because it just looks better
RESIZING
CTRL + ALT + I
♫ Set the width to 750px.
DUPLICATING THE BASE LAYER ETC.
This is just something I personally want to see on each PSD file. Make sure you do everything up there ↑ before you do this.
I just got used to naming it this way. OC much 8D
1. Duplicate the base layer
2. Set the opacity of the new layer to 30%
3. Make the new layer invisible
4. Do all subsequent editing on the base layer
♫ You don't really need to set the opacity, I could do that myself, though I would appreciate it ❤
CLONING
The clone tool. How can we live without it?
[clone1] →
[clone4] ♫ Yes but please make sure to do this properly, else it'd look like it has patches haphazardly pasted on top D:
♫ If you zoom out and it looks as if nothing was written on it, then you're doing it right 8D
ERASING THE TEXT
Click on your starting point~
Hold down Shift, then click on another point~
♫ But of course ಠ_ಠ
♫ It's a nifty little trick that also comes in handy when redrawing~
FINAL
RECAP!
1. Set the mode to Grayscale
2. Crop/Rotate if necessary
3. Adjust levels if necessary
4. Resize: set width to 750px
5. Duplicate background layer, set new layer opacity to 30%
6. Set new layer visibility to false
7. Clean/Edit/Erase on background layer
8. Rinse
9. Repeat
♫ Having a duplicate layer makes it easier to proofread, check which text goes to which bubble, and typeset the SFX. See, it isn't just a useless quirk of mine 8D
♫ ALSO! In a project, if there's something you don't think you could edit because you had to like, redraw something, LEAVE IT ALONE, leave it to me (or the typesetter who gets it) to do something about it 8D
♫ After all's done, RAR/ZIP 'em, upload them somewhere, then send them to me ヽ(´▽`)/
