Darkness Plot - Research Notes

Research Notes
Anyone with access to Torchwood's files or who have had dealings with the files that the Dean entrusted to Torchwood can know about any of the information below.  These are just bullet points taken from two dozen large documents.  You may also come up with other information not listed here, like research names, research logs, experiments on the artifacts, encounters, etc etc.  Use your imagination!

  1. The creature in the Endless Hallway is linked to an artifact called "The Shining Trapezohedron" which is basically a large, cylindrical crystal with a long, sharp 'spike' on each end that has been cut into a myriad of facets.  The crystal can show anyone that looks into it other instances of time and various other dimensions.  It also acts as a gateway to these dimensions, though rarely physically.
  2. The crystal was found in Egypt by Doctor Bowen (deceased) at Miskatonic University roughly 40 years ago.  At the time, Albert Wilmarth (survivor and currently living at the men's dorms) was a graduate student of ancient languages and literature and accompanied the expedition.  There are several expedition notes written by Wilmarth in the collection.
  3. Very early on in the documents, it becomes clear that researchers at the university became obsessed with the crystal and the "visions" it gave them, leading to experimentation with it which include subjecting students and staff to the crystal and recording their thoughts and feelings -- mostly violent or fearful -- and their visions.  There are no notes by Wilmarth any longer but those characters that worked with or had access to the documents found in Hasley's house about the ressurection serum will see a few researcher names that are familiar to both projects.
  4. Roughly five years into the research crystal started to direct the researchers through whispers on how to do their research, including how to bend the laws of space and time using the crystal.  This led to the construction of the Endless Hallway (the exact HOW this had been done was either not recorded or has been destroyed.)  The hallway was completely blocked off to anyone not doing research and as it is not visible from outside the building, only the researchers knew of it's existance.
  5. It is mentioned that in order to facilitate construction of the Hallway, the crystal was placed in a globe of biological liquid (exact nature not recorded) that rests on an iron bird bath like pedastal.
  6. The whispers from the crystal showed researchers and scholars where to find previously unknown and likely dangerous artifacts and directed them to bring them to the Endless Hallway.  They now line the hall.
  7. Ten years ago, Bowen was killed by being consumed by something that came out of the crystal - dark with a white, featureless face.  The notes mention that a blackness surrounded him after extinguishing all light from the room.  No other researchers were harmed.  The hallway was immediately commissioned by former Dean Hasley to be lined with florescent lightbulbs that would never be extinguished and put on their own power supply in case power was cut to the rest of campus.  However, after another two years of testing, it became obvious that the creature could only be held at bay if it was not hungry or in the presence of 'burning' light such as that by candles, daylight or incandescent bulbs.  While it has been shown to cross 'artificial' light from florescent bulbs, it seems hesitant to do so and always collects in shadows.
  8. The Haunter flesh, both living (Bowen, the survivors that wandered into the hallway) and dead (dust particles that ought to have collected on the books).
  9. It is very slow and can be easily outrun so long as a person is not cornered.
  10. It was also discovered that the globe that the crystal rests in must be topped off from time to time to keep the creature in the crystal.  Again, there is no mention of what the liquid is that is used, just that it's biological and has recently been DNA tested.  See Handy's notes from an unopened file found on the Dean's desk back in July.  The research notes were note signed.
  11. After the deaths of a dozen researchers, research was stopped and the library's endless hallway was sealed up at the archway.  It is unknown how it became unsealed.
