You lucky FL - not only am I updating you on Stargate Universe whether you want me to or not, I also have some rather unexpected Red Dwarf news!

First up: apparently the Stargate Universe pilot will include a familiar face in a cameo appearance. You have until the end of this sentence to guess who it is!

I know - who could possibly have guessed that ahead of time, right? ;) Though to be fair it appears that the writers may not have a lot of choice - someone dug up an interview from a few years ago in which Amanda Tapping said that because of licensing/rights issues, the only established characters allowed to appear in any new series pilot must be from the original movie. It's something to do with taking credit for whether the pilot episode is successful or something.
Anyway, if it's true then their only real choices were Daniel and Jack, and they're having enough trouble getting Jack to appear in the ORIGINAL series right now. :P

As for the acronym, I know what you mean - even though most universities in the UK seem to follow a 'University of X' pattern (e.g. University of St Andrews, giving us the unfortunate acronym of U.S.A.) I also associate any 'U' ending with university. Still, that means there's a plot idea ready and waiting for them if Universe doesn't work out - Stargate University! The place where all the smart teens go to learn wormhole physics and how to translate Ancient, after the Stargate project is finally revealed to the world! Guaranteed USAF tuition fee sponsorship! What could possibly go wrong?
