September 26
Tomorrow a new workweek is going to start. Well, today was a perfect end of the week - a lazy day. Woke up quite late, at 9. Went to check out a garage sale on the cross of Metcalfe and Pretorian. Haven’t found anything of particular interest. Then I decided to move to the flee market once more. Met some fellow interns, good to see familiar faces overseas. Bought myself a pendant-like ocarina with Canadian maple leaf on it. It's not tuned, but still it resembles an ocarina. More of a souvenir. The people who were selling it were Hungarian, and they even know where Uzhhorod and Khust are located. The neighbouring seller was Slovak. I wonder if it is on purpose? Then I returned to the hotel, done a little work on the program and went asleep. In the evening We had a guest - a guy my two roommates met at a Ukrainian band performance. Mat. He brought a violin. And a sopilka. Yup, a Ukrainian sopilka. He was at an English camp last year in Ukraine as far as I understood and bought it in Lviv. If I were told that I will meet someone in Canada who plays sopilka I would hardly believe. But if I were told that I will meet a Canadian who plays a sopilka. And here is not of Ukrainian ancestry. That is amazing. So all of us spent the evening talking, drinking tea and trying to play together a little. That was really great. When I come back to Ukraine I should definitely try to play with other people, not regarding the instrument. But I need to practice more first. Especially in technique and improvisation. Well, I still have time. I think it will be a good thing to practice a little every day the same as I write these posts. I’ll try to start form tomorrow. So the guy plays really well. And he was not attending the musical school or sopilka classes as I did. Now I have an example. Really, good music is far more than just a set of memorized notes and moves. That is the thing I need to master. Playing with another sopilka was a really memorable experience. It was very comfortable. Hope there will be future times as well. Tomorrow a new week will start. Oh, it started already, it’s 0.06.
