November 11
Thursday. The Remembrance Day in Canada. The day when all the country honours the memory of Canadian veterans and fallen soldiers. In the morning I met with the girl I know from the Virsky concert. She is from Croatia, but is currently working in the parliament. When we were walking in the morning, my roommate and I, to the meetings we both were to attend, we saw a marching orchestra of bagpipers and drummers. I could have never thought that bagpipes can be played so lound without a speaker! It was beautiful, and I even captured a video of it. So after meeting my new Croatian friend we went to the parade near the tomb of the unknown soldier and watched all the activities that took place there for about an hour. The ceremony consisted of speaches, greetings, the anthem, few blank canon shots and some other action. David Johnston was there, but the Prime Minister did not come, I wonder why? In the crowd I have seen the Leader of the Opposition nonethless. After the end of the ceremonial part we had a great walk to the War Museum, where we spent the next 3 hours. Because of the Remembrance Day there was free admission, so this increased the willingness to attend the museum even more. The 4 main parts of the exhibition were "Wars before Independence", "WWI", "WWII", "Period after WWII". A lot of interesting things there. The exhibits I remembered the most are 2 - the car (Black Mercedes) which Hitler used for parades, captures by American troops in 1945. The second one - a tile damaged by radiation from the Hiroshima bombing. There was also a huge hall with a lot of vehicles and war machines there, starting from the 19th century and up untill modern times. Often there were people, veterans who actually took part in certain conflicts or knew a lot about certain equipment, who were willing to tell the most detailed information to the visitors willing to listen. After this great visit we went to the market area, where my companion went for a lunch and I went for a meeting for the chairpersons for tomorrows Model Ukraine conference. Now I know my functions, but I will describe them tomorrow if at all. After I returned to the hotel I ched my mail and then joined some other interns for a dinner kindly hosted by Marta and Stepan from the Ukrainian diaspora in Ottawa. We were delivered there by Mr. Ksenia (I am really bad with surnames). All of us had a great time and discussed a lot of topics, starting from religion and ending up with politics and language issue in Ukraine. The dinner was gorgeous. I also made a few pictures. The time passed very fast and we were back in the hotel after 10 PM. Tomorrow the conference will commence, I have to rest. Good day.
