I've always thought so. Men aren't supposed to hit women anymore. Adults aren't supposed to hit other adults working for them, even if the role of one of them is that of servitude. People aren't even supposed to hit their pets anymore. Why are children, the most impressionable members of society, any different? How can you try and teach a child ethically that violence is bad, when you teach them by your very actions that violence is exactly the way to control others and force your will through?
Ah the anger. This boggles me. I wonder if anti-slavery proponents felt this same astonishment back in the days of slavery.
