Re-entering an old fandom...

Nov 19, 2013 16:46

After casting around unsuccessfully for something new to be fannish about, I've migrated back to my old fannish state, my original fandom, my earliest days fandom, from before I knew what fandom was. The act I've known for all these years… it's a bit alarming, how much I'm in love with the Beatles all over again. Except this time from the ( Read more... )

I'm working on correcting the icon situation. I remember I used to have a great icon of Paul that was just labeled "1968," but it was lost in the great LJ paid account lapse of whatever-year-it was. :-)

The Beatles were my first fandom too! I was only 7 when I saw them on Ed Sullivan and it changed my entire life just like that.

My friends and I used to spend our time talking abut The Beatles, listening to The Beatles, reading about The Beatles, dreaming about The Beatles.

My boys are 20 and 23. Just the other day I was trying to imagine them as part of a world wide phenononom with millions of girls screaming after them. I could not.

The book looks fascinating. I'll have to reserve it from my library. I've already ordered my copy of the BBC vol. 2 album.

It's really amazing to me that those four boys emerged as un-monstrous as they did. I mean, yeah, there was bad behavior throughout, and some serious egos, but for the most part, I truly believe that they ended (and are carrying on) as they began - as fundamentally decent people. I saw a recent clip of Paul McCartney being swarmed by famous people (that's a level of celebrity that's truly astonishing - he's the one that the superstars fanboy/girl), and it struck me… he's been dealing with this nonstop for 50 years. Celebrity hit when they were in their late teens/early 20s and it never went away.

Me too! Can't wait - I loved the first one.

I agree that they seemed to keep their heads on fairly straight. Which is incredibly impressive considering.

I loved the first BBC album too! I strongly believe you can tell a lot about a band by listening to them do covers. So that was both fascinating and proved what I had always known - they were just a damn good band.

I was going to say the Beatles were my first fandom, but actually I had a few earlier ones (Planet of the Apes! classic horror movies! Sherlock Holmes!). But they were one of my hugest fandoms ever.

The Beatles as a fandom has everything. An amazing cast of characters, one of the most intense psycho-dramas ever, rags-to-riches, and the best soundtrack ever!

I'm right there with you. I saw them in concert once, back in the day, from nosebleed seats, and they were little dark spots scurrying around the stage, and the arena was lit from flashbulbs the whole time, and I couldn't have said what the songs were, for the screaming.

But by George, I saw the Boys in concert.

I am beyond jealous.

In HS I knew someone who had seen their last concert at Shea Stadium in NYC. He actually rushed the field after and pried up a bit of sod which he had preserved in a case. I wonder if he still has it?

I believe he's in good company - as I recall, Paul McCartney played the final show at Shea, and pried up a bit of the sod himself. And if memory serves, all four of them kept some sod from their final show of their final tour at Candlestick Park…?

Oh that is so adorable.

I know Shea had to be completely resodded afterwards.
