They knew he was in charge; they let themselves be burned out for Britain. Stars that shown so bright, saving the world in secret.
He remembers, but so few others will ever know, his lads, faithful till the end.
Laughing they went to their deaths. Together: like always.
Sometimes, just before he turns a corner, he thinks he hears them: ribald laughter, scuffling feet, racing agents, always there, ready still.
It comforts him, but he knows he should have been the first to go.
