Episode Discussion: Silence

Silence:

Where it looks like a deaf mute named Larry stole diamonds and killed a security guard. But like a Mary Higgins Clark book, the real perp is easy to figure out from the time the fake Father Ignatius lights up a cigar in front of Starsky & Hutch.

But of course, they don't figure it out for more than half the episode. What fun would that be? They believe it's the overweight, out of shape Larry, because the fake Father Ignatius is framing him.

Crotch Shots

Unfortunately not as many of these in this episode.

Hutch watching Starsky unveil his masterpiece of 3 long hotdogs (he was probably thinking of Hutch, he even talks about marrying the hot dogs.)

Sexy holster shot of Hutch in black.  (I had to pause that scene for awhile.)

Both of them, while rolling over the seats in the movie theater, show nice tight crotches.

Storyline, what storyline?

The complicated connection of Marty (fake Father Ignatius), Kim, Bessinger, Larry and RC actually made this one of the better case stories.  It would've worked better with a different actor for Larry though.

Do you think Jessie knows?  It's hard to tell.  She seems awful protective of the fake Father Ignatius.

I'm not Catholic, but I've never heard of a priest smoking a cigar.  You'd think that would be the first clue.  It was for me.

The killer is either the worst driver or likes to taunt cops, because he had a good 2 min get-away.  Oh, but then we wouldn't have S&H be able to find Larry, would we?

Midway through the episode they change their mind about Larry being guilty, but they don't detail why or how they changed their minds, when they go to Dobey.

Dobey claims a "police officer's been killed".  Was the security guard doing double duty?  It was not mentioned earlier that he was a police officer.  Or is Dobey being general; that both jobs are uniformed and are to protect people & things.

It's RC who actually cracks the case (though w/S&H's help).

Which came first?  The cliche or the sarcasm?

The security guard must've been a Sheriff in 1950's spaghetti westerns.  "Listen in there....You don't have a chance."

Love Jessie calling Starsky a sexist!  She must've been arrested by him in the past.  And then he goes & proves it by pinching a grown woman's cheek and calling her cutie.

Good Cop/Bad Cop

Since when do S&H pick up petty criminals and take them to homicide?  Even Dobey thinks they're idiots.

How ironic is Jessie's speech?  "Beware of false prophets that come to you in sheep's clothing...."  Could this show hit you over the head any harder with a Mary Higgins Clark book?

Technically S&H are on duty, Captain Dobey, when you tell them to track down Bessinger.

Hutch gets out of the car while chasing the killer.  Why?  (Even though it makes for a good scene or vid capture).  And Starsky stopped to let him out.  Walking along side the car like that only serves to put Hutch in very real danger.  They don't know where the perpetrator is.

How in the hell did S&H think Larry, in his fine physical shape, made it out a 2-story window with no mishaps and in record time?  And why do they think he's the only one who eats 'Best Bars'?

Hutch seems to understand sign language, too (when they talk to RC, he knows some of RC's motions).  He's such a genius!  LOL

Do they even care about what happened to the original Father Ignatius?  They ask and Kim tells them he was killed, but not by who just that he wasn't involved.  But nothing else gets said about him.

They way S&H put innocent people in danger at the movie theater, is scary.  If that's how real cops operated, more innocent by-standers would be killer.

Notes

DS really got into his roles.  When Jessie says Starsky looks like Paul Muni, he just rolls his eyes and shakes his head, like any long suffering significant other.

Hutch's eyes are extraordinarily blue in this episode.  Esp when he wears the blue turtleneck.

Starsky hiking the paper up to hide behind when Dobey walks in, is funny.  But it's funnier when Dobey calls him out.  He didn't make Captain for nothing!

The Hutchinson finger comes out in this episode.

The girl playing the carhop (Christa Helm) was murdered back in 1977.  It's still unsolved.  This was one of her only roles.  It's a shame, because she really seems to be a pretty good actress.

Hutch is on a diet.  Though he claims he's only maintaining his fantastic physical shape...er condition.

Starsky says 'thin hoppopitamus".  Was he trying to get Hutch's goat by being annoying, or was it an honest RL flub like the one where he finds Gillian's body?

Starsky says "bonnet", which is a British term, instead of "hood".  Was this a common word in the US in the 1970s?  I don't remember it every being used.

In fact Starsky walks on his hood later in the episode, yet he bitches about Hutch doing it.

Father Ignatius' assistant (Kim) is played by Steve Kanaly, who became a regular on 'Dallas' as Ray Krebs.  (And he's just as good looking here.)

Larry is played by Chuck McCann (still alive), who will also guest star in 'Murder on Stage 17.'

I like the cinematography while they're searching for Larry w/RC.  The editors did a good job passing from neighborhood to neighborhood in a fluid manner that is not often seen in this show.  The score is matches nicely as well.

Can anyone identify that movie?  I'm not a big western fan, and there was nothing on the outside marquee that could be used for reference or clues.

Poor Starsky gets knocked on the head by the door when 'Marty' (fake Father Ignatius) tries to escape, and then he gets tangled in the curtains.  So the show is seems to still be trying to force him into the 'bumbling side-kick' type of character, like they originally wanted.

When Marty fires at Hutch (& then Starsky) in the theater, he hits several seats, but it's obvious there're no bullet holes.

Let's count how many times Starsky misses his meals:

1)  with the murdered carhop

2)  at Hutch's later on ("I couldn't eat that meal you invited me over for last night.")

3)  Dobey sends them out looking for Bessinger.

4)  Bessinger runs into him, smashing his face into the plate of Chinese food.

5)  At the hamburger stand with RC.
