Twenty years can make a difference

May 24, 2010 21:30

Twenty years ago today my grandmother, Mary Kubycheck, lost her battle with cancer. From diagnosis to the day she had passed away was just over three months. Not a day goes by that I don't think of the impact she made on my life.

When I think of the impact cancer has had on my family already - we lost my grandfather, Robert Kubycheck, to cancer; my Dad is a survivor of both prostate and skin cancer; my uncle is a skin cancer survivor; another relative has suffered from esophigial cancer; another relative is a breast cancer survivor (and I know that is not all we have had to deal with) - I know without a doubt that I will do anything to make sure my younger cousins don't have to feel the pain cancer brings. If making myself exhausted by walking around the track until dawn is what it takes, I will do it and I hope you are with me.

Our team name is Team GEEK. We are all geeks about something, but cancer is something we should all be aware of. When I think of how much cancer treatment, diagnosis, and prevention has changed in the twenty years since my grandmother died, I am truly amazed.
Please, if you can give anything, that will help the future. Imagine what can be done in another twenty years...

Thank you.

Love,
Carole
