Ok, so that might be a small exaggeration, but they are causing bad headaches in my family. It's also a very bad title for a song, don't ya think? Anyway, my piece of advice to anyone shipping things is don't use FedEx, they will ruin your life for several days.
Mom sent the package on September 8. It arrived on September 16. Because the 16th was a Saturday, I couldn't pick it up from the mail room until Monday and that was fine. When I got it there were two packages there, one being my printer. Except the other box wasn't the one I packed into. Maybe the box tore open or something, that's fine too. Until I open it up and half my clothes are in an orange trash bag wet and smelling of mold. And the three books I had enclosed were also in an orange trash bag and wet, complete with bleeding ink and absolutely covered in mold. Crap.
Mom told me she had insured the package up to $100 and I should make a claim. That involves filing a claim online, faxing some info, and having the company pick up the package to examine it and make sure I'm not full of it. Seems fair enough. Then I fought with the web site and the form for two hours, making me late for the first of four meetings I had last night. When I finally got home I finished packing everything back into the box and sealed it with the shipping tape I had to buy. This morning I proceeded to haul a 37lb, awkwardly large box down three flights of stairs and to the mail room two blocks away at 9am in traffic, while trying not to be late to a class across campus that started at 9:30. (The mail room doesn't open until 9 so I couldn't have done it earlier.) I left everything in the mail room and they said they would take care of it because it was supposed to be picked up from where it was delivered. And around noon I got a voice mail from a FedEx guy saying they attempted to pick up a package and it couldn't be found. What the crap?!?! Theoretically they can't keep packages in the mail room overnight, so I should have picked it up before they closed tonight. I figure if they don't even know where it is then they don't know if it's staying there overnight. And then I don't have to carry it up and down the street and stairs again. Besides, they screwed up so I figure they owe me this one.
I've got a major headache right now. Thankfully my wonderful mother has been amazing and helping me chase this around. She's probably made just as many phone calls as I have and she sent the fax because she had most of the information there. Customer service has been no help whatsoever though, and it looks like this could take several more days before they even have the dumb thing, then they get to keep it for a week to look at it.
Thankfully my nice expensive leather jacket was not among the casualties. Unfortunately in adding up original costs of everything damaged it totaled $250. My Trevor Pryce jersey was in there! Ok, this is turning into unconnected grumblings so I will stop. Just so long as you understand not to bother with these guys when sending stuff.
