Something More

I wasn't planning on updating today, I was planning on exploring Boston. Unfortunately it's raining, almost as if there's a tropical storm hanging around or something. Dumb. I guess I'll get to know my roommates well. Or at least the one who's here. Tiffany went to buy books with her parents four hours ago. Maybe she got lost? Never mind, Rachel left with a friend of hers. She knows a few people from high school who go here. Woohoo, place to myself! So here's the rundown thus far. Room first, then roommates. Just a warning, I don't remember what anyone has been told so it could get redundant.

I'm staying in a brownstone on Beacon Street. For those who know the layout of Boston that means I can walk a block one direction and be in Kenmore Square. If I walk a few blocks the other direction I've reached Boston Commons. This is the heart of original Boston! Seriously my dorm is a building that's, oh, 300 years old. And my room is huge!! At orientation I stayed in a triple that was half this size. The beds were bunked over the desk and dresser and we each had a box for a closet. Here everything is on the ground and we have a walk-in closet that is absolutely ENORMOUS!! There are three girls in a room across the hall and it's not nearly as big as this one. They're having trouble finding places for everything. I really think if i check it out tonight I'll see a bed in the middle of the floor. I'm on the top floor of only four levels, and there are eight girls on 2,3, and 4 each. The first one has our RA's room (haven't seen the inside, only the huge double doors leading into it) and a lobby complete with an ancient TV (it has bunny ears!) Unfortunately we have community bathrooms, but every floor has a real bathroom. The shower is also a bath tub. On the top floor we have two bathrooms, one with just a toilet, sink, and mirror. I guess that's the basics. Across the street are two frat houses, possibly from MIT. That could be fun. We have a fire escape out one window, which we decided doubles as a tiny balcony. The prudential center, Sheraton, and Hilton are visible out the other window.

All three of us girls are freshman, despite the thing on our door that labels me as a senior. Tiffany is from Tracey CA. It's right next to San Fransisco. She flew in with her parents and in her words she's a "really nervous person who way over-packed" and is "probably going to send most of it back." To me that means I don't have to go out and buy the stuff I didn't have room to pack, like a trash can or dishes. Rachel and I can find uses for the things she thinks she doesn't need. She's quiet and seems pretty nervous. I have a feeling she comes from a very protected environment. I'm pretty sure I'll end up offending her in some way.

Rachel, on the other hand is exactly like me. She's from CO (Boulder, poor girl) and mostly hangs out with guys. She's loud and outgoing and excited about everything. Listening to her talk I'd think I was having a conversation with Jesso transformed. Their voices are exactly the same and they use the same voice inflections, same laugh, the works. It makes me laugh. I was listening to the Doors when she walked in and she not only knew who it was, she was singing along. Sweet! Turns out most of her friends back home are in various bands. She even flew the red eye flight on Jet Blue complete with a layover at JFK for crying out loud! Looks like I won't be the third wheel I was expecting.

Both girls are about half my size, and I had to help Rachel up the stairs with her suitcase. Yesterday at check-in I had two guys carry mine for me. It wasn't my idea, the guy I checked in with knew I had two heavy suitcases and had to walk down the street. After I finished he said "If you go outside there should be some big strong men wearing red shirts. Have them help you." Clearly he was an upperclassmen and didn't have to do grunt work. So I walked out there and said "I was told two big strong men would carry these for me." They were sophomores and really impressed that I got a brownstone. They were pretty obvious about wanting to stay and hang out with me because they wouldn't leave. Ugh, boys. I felt bad about them having to drag those 60 lb suitcases up four flights of stairs, but I was glad I didn't have to do it.

I guess that's it for now. At least ya'll (yes I'm still a hillbilly) know my environment. The walk to class is 1 or 1.5 miles, but I've got city around me so it doesn't seem that bad. I did it yesterday and was surprised at how quick it seemed. I'm gonna go laugh at the girls across the hall, I'll call various people at random times later.

Always,
Chrissie
