В мире линукса это был, по общему мнению, второй человек после создателя всего проекта Линуса Торвальдса. Ян с женой Деброй, также специалистом по ИТ, -- создатели проекта Debian (DEBra + IAN). Проект Debian и его ответвления (Ubuntu, Mint и другие) -- вероятно, наиболее распространённые варианты ОС на основе линуксового ядра, наиболее стабильные, устойчивые и простые в настройке.

Что же произошло?!
А произошёл полный тушите свет. На добропорядочного специалиста по ИТ с годовым доходом в полтора миллиона долларов в дорогом районе Сан-Франциско недалеко от его дома, как на бездомного негра, напали озверевшие санфранцисские полицейские. Избили, бросили в полицейскую машину на залитый мочой пол, довезли до дома, избили ещё раз, выписали штраф в 25000 долларов за "нападение на полицейского"... Дальнейшее непонятно, судя по всему, ему удалось зайти домой, так полицейские вломились в дом, вытащили на улицу и продолжали его бить, и не только бить, а какая-то баба в погонах начала срывать с него нижнюю одежду...
Потом Ян то ли покончил с собой, то ли его убили...
