I've had problems with this for a while. I bought a game which simply wouldn't load without the patch-now I've got broardband, and the patch came out more or less as the game was released, so I wasn't personally too hassled by it. However if you haven't got internet access-which a lot of people still haven't, there is no way of getting the patches-unless a games magazine happens to include it, this costs money and quite a bit of it. By its very nature a software company is going to have some issues it will have had problems finding-no company has 1,000,000 employees to test things to death: but under the trade descriptions act some software is illegal as it is unfit for intended purpose as released. The situation reminds me of buying a new car with the hope the steering wheel will be released eventually. I'm not sure who's fault it is but someone needs to do somthing about it-perhaps if no one bought the new games it would work-but who wants to wait for a month or more after deus ex2 is released?? The big problem is the game may work fine on the companys test machines but once it gets out there then there are an almost infinate variety of computer/software combinations that can cause problems. This is imo why it doesn't happen with console games- there is only ONE configuration.
The problems aren't config based, the software is just more buggy than a roach motel. The AI is faulty, graphical glitches abound, following the plot causes the game to crash, a menu doesn't work...
