I had a bunch of stuff due this morning via e-mail for the Kidd program. I worked on stuff for about 6 hours yesterday (yay Thanksgiving!) and finally got it done. First, a few weeks ago I had to come up with my LOI (line of inquiry), which is a theme that I will research for my work and write on, etc. The class is a year long class and by the end of the year I'm supposed to produce a piece of work (either a novella or a short book of poetry, etc.). My concentration if poetry, of course. So due this morning was my final LOI proposal draft, an annotated bibliography on the books I am reading/researching from for next term and why I chose them, AND my syllabus for next term. We had to design it all ourselves. Which is really cool, I mean, I got to choose my own books and decide when I'd read them. But it was waaaaaaaaay more difficult than I thought. A good 3 hours of my time spent yesterday was just FINDING books to read. 2 had to be critical texts on my LOI, and 6 had to be poetry. My LOI is the Western Ideal of Love & Sex, meaning the ideals formed in Western society on what love is and why they were shaped this way and what role sex plays within love, etc. I was worried about finding critical texts because there's not a lot out there specifically on this topic, but I found some great ones! One is called "The New Psychology of Love", written by a professor from Yale and another is called "Sex & Pleasure in Western Culture" -- perfect! Then of course I found tons of books of poetry from some fabulous authors such as Sylvia Plath, Richard Siken, Dorianne Laux (who I'm taking class from next term, yay!), Sharon Olds, and Linda Gregg. There's another book I also added into my syllabus called "The Bloody Chamber" by Angela Carter. She takes 10 common fairy tales (which is something I believe forms a child's unrealistic view on love, along with other aspects of the media) and re-writes them through a feminist perspective. They're also really fucked up, which is always fun.
In conclusion, yay for Ashlee finally getting on track and making her whole syllabus and yadda yadda yadda! I win at life today. I mean, lyfe.
