My Merlin Prompt Table

He has no desire to be her husband.

He has no desire to see this engagement through.

His heart belongs to another only he can barely admit it to himself, let alone everybody else.

The rose he gives her is pink, not red.

Red roses he only gives to one person. One woman alone in all the world will he ever give red roses to.

Red roses mean love.

Pink; it means admiration. Thank you. Grace and sweetness.

Princess Elena certainly has two of these things. Maybe one day she’ll have the other two too. One day he’ll thank her and another day she grasp the grace that Princesses usually have. But she’s quirky. She’s perfectly lovely in every way.

But she’s not Gwen.

She’ll never be Gwen.

Deep down Arthur knows he can never marry without love and he will not.

If only he can find a way to prevent this. To stop his father from making him do this.

White roses.

They symbolism purity. Secrecy. Humility. They let the one you love know that you are worth of them and you in return.

He gives her one when he sneaks into her home once Elena is gone. He tells her all these things and she smiles. She grins so wide before she lets out a laugh. She takes it from him before he produces another he had tucked into the back of his belt. Together they mean unity.

That’s what he wants. What he wants from her. A union.

The only union he wants with any woman, he wants it with her and her alone.

The next time he presences her with two roses the stems are twisted together.

She looks at him with a simple, thankful smile. She doesn’t know what it symbolises. She’s never known. She relishes in him telling her about how - when he presents he with a deep red rose, burgundy - it means unconscious beauty and he tells her that that is exactly what she is.

When he gives her single red roses time and time again, he says it every time with a boyish flicker in his eye. They mean I love you, and that is something she will never doubt. Not for a single moment.

But when he gives her a white and red rose with their stems twirled about each other in a simple dance, she just thinks back to when he gave her them before, declaring it as symbol of their union.

This time it is more than a symbol of their union. It is an invitation to enter into it.

As he utters this to her, a picture of nervousness, something she has never seen before, she drops the roses in shock. She can’t believe the words he is asking her. She knew it was coming. She’d hoped. With Uther gone and Camelot living under a new king, if he was still insane he would ask her. And she would, in her own insanity, accept immediately.

He didn’t give her an elaborate speech like she’d thought he might. All tongue-tied and twisted.

He went without many words. Only five words, “It means, says, ‘marry me’.”

She cannot speak.

Instead she picks the flowers from the floor and gently plucks the red one from the white and hands it to him. He frowns down at it, unsure of whether she is throwing his gesture back into his face or be symbolic in her reply.

He took it.

Slowly she hands him the white one.

Together they mean unity.

He holds them both in one hand and slowly she winds the red around the stem of the white with a small smile on her face. She holds them in place.

He looks from the flowers to her with a nervous smile on his face. It falters before coming back in full force; “That’s a yes?”
