When I was a kid my mother hated carving pumpkins and wrapping Christmas presents. As a child, this attitude puzzled me. What's wrong wtih pumpkins and presents? As an adult, mother and someone who works outside the home, I get it. Wrapping Christmas presents is one huge pain and all the work you go to in order to make them pretty is over in 30 seconds of ripping.
As for Hallowe'en, carving a pumpkin is just one more thing to add to an already overflowing work week.
Yesterday I asked my kid if his childhood would be forever marred if we didn't carve a pumpkin this Hallowe'en. He looked at me like I had a pumpkin head and said "why would I care?" So I hauled a lighted pumpkin decoration out of the basement and will stick that on the front porch.
I am breaking free of the bonds of Martha Stewart and it feels wonderful.
