Seasonal Griping

Dec 22, 2015 15:47

Sleigh Ride, Winter Wonderland, Let It Snow, and Jingle Bells are NOT Christmas songs! They are songs that celebrate winter. Period. But, good luck in ever hearing them on the radio after December 25th, since most people lump those in with Christmas. Some years back, Sting released an album of winter music, as he felt there was a death of winter-related music out there, and what there was, was getting lost in amongst the Christmas songs.

It also irks me that one radio station around here starts playing Christmas music on Thanksgiving, and then stops on Christmas Day. Christmas doesn't even start until Christmas Day, and it would be nice to hear the Christmas music during all of Christmas, instead of all those days before Christmas.

That brings me to another annual gripe of mine, and that is with stores and people "celebrating" the 12 days of Christmas prior to Christmas. You'd think that in these modern days of the internet, that people could google it and learn that Christmas runs from Christmas Day to Epiphany, January 6th. My mother, who was born in 1928, remembered celebrating "old" Christmas as a child in North Carolina. One of these days, I'll poll my aunts and uncles to see when the family stopped celebrating January 6th, and just only celebrated December 25th. Mom was the second child of 10, with her oldest brother born in 1927 and the youngest sibling in 1945.

End of griping!

I would like to wish all of my LJ friends a very Merry Christmas, Happy Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy/Good whatever religious or cultural celebrations you all might practice. I also wish all of you a wonderful and healthy 2016!
