Bitching in General

Just a few rants to get off my chest:

I'm so tired of cancer messing around with Nolly's life. Every time he's getting ahead, something new hits him. If it's not cancer itself, then it's some side-effect from his medications or treatments. Enough already. Either kill the guy or let him live, and if the answer is to let him live, then let him actually get a chance to do some living!

Every Christmas it's the same old thing. Radio stations around here have contests/giveaways starting 12 days before Christmas and use the "12 Days of Christmas" designation for them. The 12 days of Christmas refers to the 12 days AFTER Christmas, culminating in January 6th, which is the celebration of the day that the three wise men reached Jesus. In the old days, December 25th was merely a religious day. People went to church to celebrate Christmas. January 6th was reserved for the gift-giving.

Why do Lord of the Rings fanfiction writers persist in using terms in their stories that Tolkien never, ever used? I'm getting sick and tired of reading stories that contain the phrases "By the Valar" or "Thank the Valar". Number one, Tolkien never used those terms. And if he would have used something like that, it wouldn't have been the Valar. It would have been "Eru" who is the god of Tolkien's worlds. The Valar are more akin to the archangels. And a lot of these writers claim to have read Tolkien, so they really should know better.

And in the LOTR vein, why do some of these writers have Faramir or others in Gondor ignorant of Sindarin (one of the Elvish languages)? Tolkien mentions that Sindarin was spoken by those who lived in Minas Tirith and adjacent lands, and also in Dol Amroth. The people there also spoke Westron. In "The Two Towers", Frodo and Sam are surprised to hear the Ithilien rangers speaking the language of the Elves. So why do these writers always make Aragorn react with surprise when it's revealed that Faramir knows the language? Or why do they have Faramir or Boromir learning it reluctantly? It's not that hard to research your subject, people. If you can't afford to buy "The Lord of the Rings" then borrow the books from the library, especially "The Return of the King", since that book contains the appendices. If you expect people to read what you write, then put some effort into getting your facts right.

End of rant. For now, anyway.
