It's gonna sound like such a cop out to say it but if I could take any word out of common use it'd definitely be 'sorry'. I've gotten real sick of hearing it over the years - people telling me they were sorry about Jess, about Dad and Dean. Hell they were even sorry about Mom and I was twenty-two before I even really knew the difference between having her and not.
And it's not like I don't get that it's just something to say when there's nothing else because I've said it myself to more people than I can count. Wives and husbands, mostly. We tell them we're sorry and then we invade their privacy all the same, and I might not poke and prod them the way my brother does but I'll push them just as hard for answers they don't want to part with.
And then I'll say sorry again, all automatic and thoughtless. I don't give it a second thought once the job's done, I certainly don't lose sleep over it.
It just doesn't seem to mean anything any more.
