Roy LeGrange had an empire whether he knew it or not. It was built on the belief that he could save lives and hold back the inevitable.
People flocked to him the same way they do to great leaders of our time, they worshipped the ground he walked on and gave him everything of themselves. All in the hopes that they would be saved and that his mighty God would reach down and direct his hand to them.
Some were lucky - they were saved but none of them knew the real price of their salvation and none of them knew what sacrifices had to be made for them to be saved. Those that had been turned away, cast aside by God and diminished in their belief that they were worthy would never know how lucky they were not to have been responsible for another’s death.
The empire was strong and the belief system inherent in every action and every touch by Roy LeGrange to the sick and the dying. The people not meant for this world but saved because a so called higher power deemed them worthy of a second chance.
Dean Winchester was one of these lost souls.
He was dying, struck down by a bad heart but he was fine with it, he’d accepted his fate. His brother, Sam, hadn’t. They found Roy LeGrange and for some reason the man chose to heal Dean’s pain away and chose to save him when he could have picked anyone in the crowd that day.
The only problem that in doing so it destroyed everything Roy had worked for it and it brought his empire crashing down. It only takes one mistake to destroy an empire and Roy’s mistake was in choosing to heal Dean.
The Winchester saw the truth and the brothers found the real power behind the figurative throne - a Reaper chained to the preacher’s wife, taking life for life and leaving corpses in his wake.
Roy LeGrange was a man of faith who had believed that he was doing God’s work but in truth he was a man who’d believed too much and hadn’t seen enough. His empire was built on lies and good intentions and those often paved the pathway into Hell.
