Prompt 15: "The first time I saw..."
The first time I saw the bruises on my dad’s face I knew he was into something dangerous and that he needed someone at his side. I was only five at the time, mind you, but I knew deep down inside that my dad needed me.
He never said the words because my dad was that kind of guy - strong and silent. He was a marine after all and you’ve got to be as tough as nails to last more than one day in an outfit like that.
I remember stitching my dad up for the first time and I remember how my hands didn’t shake. They should have by all rights considering I’d never done that kind of thing before but they didn’t. My hands were steady probably the steadiest they’d ever been in my whole life.
I guess the first time I saw my father bleed was the first time I realised he wasn’t invincible and he wasn’t Superman and I knew something needed to be done. He needed someone there, if only to take some of the strain and I figured better me than anyone else.
Not sure if I really chose this life of mine (not in the beginning anyways) I just figured it was better I was with my dad on those hunts rather than waiting with Sam in every small dingy motel room from Kansas to Maine.
It was better I was there to cover his back because who else was going to do it? Sam was too young and keeping dad alive was my way of holding the family I had left together. It felt like a step in the right direction after everything.
It made sense to me and that was all that mattered at the end of the day.
