#12- Hearing, Sight, Taste, Touch, and Smell. The five senses. Which would be the worst one for you to lose, and why?
** SPOILERS FOR SEASON 3 FINALE **
The thing about Hell is that it’s never quiet, somebody somewhere is always screaming. It isn’t Dean, he stopped screaming hours ago. He’s pretty sure he’s given the bitch upstairs and down enough satisfaction for now. Besides, with the chains gone and the hooks released, it’s just a matter of time before he’s fed quite literally to the lions. He’ll be damned if he lets them hear him scream for longer than is strictly necessary.
In the first couple days, weeks, however long he’s been hung up for all to see, Dean couldn’t look beyond the chains. The web was expansive, stretching for miles. It was as he got closer to the ground that Hell became a reality, spread outwards in front of him like an unknown war zone, a no-man’s land where only the strongest survive.
And then there’s the taste, bitter and salty. Dean’s tasted worse.
Hell is hot and rough under his palms and across his fingertips, Dean can feel every sharp angle pressing in through denim, it’s misshapen and he stumbles more than he does walk. Everything hurts, the pain is sharp and then dull, an ache set into bone and radiating outwards until it’s hard to think and feel anything beyond it.
Another thing about Hell is that it smells, of burning flesh and sulfur. It seeps in through your pores and lingers, it’s pungent and stomach turning. Dean’s not entirely sure how he hasn’t lost what’s left of his stomach contents, maybe he’s too stubborn to throw up in Hell and in front of a demon audience?
Right now, Dean would happily part with all five of his senses, but knows better than to consider it because he’ll need all five to last as long as he needs to in Hell, he needs to last long enough to find a way out.
He supposes the worst - with that all in mind - to lose would be touch, he wouldn’t know where to grip and how far he would need to crawl before he’s able to see the light beyond the pit. Dean knows it exists, he’s seen it.
